It is very rare and dangerous for the mare. Vets usually recommend abortion as complications often result in mare and foals dying.

Check out horsequest, they have a sale section for all four types. Scroll right to the bottom of the bar at the side, and then you can have a peruse! They also have a profile of the breed before you get to the ads. :)

I know of someone whose mare successfully had twins that both lived...

Most mares who twin abort either one or both of the foals. Usually when twins are conceived one of the follicles is 'crushed' against the pelvis by the vet, this breaks it up and the twin is absorbed back into the mare's body.

Sounds cruel but if you think about it it is probably better than letting the mare go for almost a full term and then aborting both foals! And trust me, getting dead foals out of a mare is not pretty nor nice for anyone involved.

The four 'sections' divide the Welsh Stud Book. There is also a Section E, which is the geldings and non-breeding stock of the other four sections. As has been mentioned before, look on HorseQuest at the four different Welsh pages, at the bottom they have a very informative half-page about each one.

In racing TB's it is some insane ratio like 1/3 mares have twins. With racing you don't want twins - the vet has to pinch out one of the embryo type things. i went to a stud once and there they had a mare that had had twins but only one foal survived. It can never really be raced. Poor thing was six months old and was the same size as one of the new borns.
