View Full Version : Do horse charities employ behaviourists?

Anyone got any idea whether horse charities/sanctuaries (e.g. ILPH, Redwings, etc) employ animal behaviourists to help with any behaviour problems the horses might have?

I just graduated this year with a degree in animal behaviour and it's so hard to know where to go next! I really want to work with horses but the careers in equine behaviour seem pretty limited. I was thinking that rescue horses must have a lot of behaviour problems through bad treatment in the past and wondered how sanctuaries deal with this. Do they employ somebody who understands animal behaviour or do they just use vets, grooms, etc?

I will write to a load of charities and ask them but thought that someone on here might be able to give me a quick answer!

Blue Cross did as they manage their horses using NH techniques.

At sussex horse rescue we have a Kelly Marks trained instructor who comes to help out with the more difficult ones.

Not sure about the others - problem is that many of the smaller ones don't have the funds.

ILPH tend to have bags of money which they spend liberally so you might have more luck there.

I'm fairly sure that Redwings have a behaviourist based permenantly with them.

Thanks very much, both of you! It definitely sounds like it's worth asking anyway.
