I'd really like to be quallified to teach horse riding one day. I did my BHS stage one a few years ago as a working pupil as I thought that this was the only way to be able to become an instructor. I was originally put in for my stage two but I chickened out...I have very little jumping confidence and would just freeze on an unknown horse when pointed at a fence. The BHS route just doesn't seem like the best idea for me. Since then people have vaguely mentioned the ABRS exams and NVQs.

I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that if you've completed an NVQ level 2 you can skip a couple of BHS exams and they're working on a teaching module so that eventually you should be able to do all of your instructor training via NVQ rather than BHS. Does anyone know any more about NVQs and becoming an insructor?

Also I know nothing about ABRS exams or any other routes to qualify as an instructor...can anyone shed any light on the subject?

You'r bhs stages are equivalent (sp) to your nvq's

On the bhs website it says this about nvq's

NVQs and SVQs are another form of qualification offered through the BHS. These qualifications are completely different from obtaining a BHS exam, which you apply to take on a specific date and on the day you either pass or fail. With NVQs and SVQs you are assessed on a continuous basis whilst at your place of work.

If you go on there website i'm sure they can explain it better than what i can

There is no NVQ module in teaching and although NVQ's offer some exemptions to BHS exams you still need to pass riding 11 or 111 before doing a teaching one. That has recently been modified but only for people who can show past experience of riding at Stage 2 level.

If you want to become a BHSAI then you can do your NVQ level 2 which is equivalent to BHS stage 2 if you do all the horse care and riding units (including jumping) you can then go on to do your BHS stage 2 or 3 and PTT etc. You then have to get your stage 3 to become a BHSAI. As far as I know you cannot do your NVQ level 3 then do your BHS PTT, you have to get the BHS stage 2 or 3. There is a teaching unit in the NVQ level 3 but this will not make you fully qualified. Good luck!
