I do... Ginny is now 28 years young, and the Queen of OTF. She's an extremely hardy horse[hooves of steel, thick coat, etc], with a mind of her own. Shes a great beginner horse, but in her younger years she competed in Barrels, and then Hunter Under Saddle. She lost her eye four years ago in a pasture accident... Appy eyes tend to be more sensitive than other horses. But even at 24, she took it all in stride and went on to give lessons.
Gin is 14.2hh, an overweight 1200lbs, and a chestnut varnish roan.
Here she is this past fall...

lol see the difference? varnish roans get lighter every year, other than their bony parts..

I don't have one, but I'd say Appys are great horses for anything. If you're looking for a horse with a thick luxourious mane and tail, then skip over the Appys, they are known for their "rat" tails :D Although some have nice mane and tails.

Ginny is a doll! I love seeing older horses with good owners who have carried them through.
I don't know a lot about appy's but I looked at a palamino mare to buy that was a registered appy. So, the coloring thing varies, apparently. I've heard they are a very hardy horse.
I use to live in Idaho, and the Nez Perce reservation is there in Lapwai, ID. The tribe raises and sells appolosas. Might be worth looking into for more info.

I have an Appy that I partboard, He LOVES to jump, and while he doesnt like too much dressage or just flat in general, he is good at it. But for him I would say jumping is the #1 thing.
And yes they are VERY hardy horses

I have an Appy currently (Heidi) & owned one in the past as well (Sapphire)
Sapphire was just under 14 hh & a solid black appaloosa. She was trained for western pleasure & was the best natured easy going mare with a heart of gold that walked the earth! She was also very tough.
Heidi my present mare is 14.1 hh approx & is a chestnut roan with a frosted rump & flaxen mane & tail.
She is very intelligent, loves people. A very easy keeper & quite rugged as well. She has very nice gaits & she loves to jump (on her own). Unlike my first Appy, Heidi is very opinionated.
I'll see if I can find pictures of them.

I just uploaded a picture of Heidi on the thread: "Markings of a chestnut pony" & it won't let me post it here as well.
Here's a recent head shot.

I owned an appaloosa called Jake for many years. He was a 15.2hh blanket-spotted red roan and was just the perfect horse. He was lively without being crazy. loved jumping, was responsive to school and a great hack. He was also healthy, long-lived and a real character.
the native Americans prized appaloosas for their stamina, courage and intelligence. I certainly agree with all those qualities.
Perhaps Jake was too intelligent for some. I put him on loan for a while with someone who I think was not as bright as him. Jake soon learned to undo his stable door and would then let the other ponies on the yard out (showing a truly generous nature). They would all then head for the feed room and help themselves.
I still miss him and often toy with the idea of getting another appaloosa. One day...

My daughter's little Appy cob.

He is kind and affectionate but has bundles of character and personality, he often has my daughter in fits of laughter with his antics. We found him after almost a year of looking for the 'right one' and he just clicked! :D

This is my sister's appy - Red. Registered name is Red Hawks Anastasi - little bit posh for him! He's a great character, does some fantastic grumpy faces, but he's a real sweetie. She's had him since he was 2 - He was Red then, with white spots:D They live out in California, so I don't get to see him all that often, but he's always changed colour when I do! He's 6 now:)

Thank you and a resounding yes:D :D :D
I started out with a few spot and have had varnish marks, marbled and now a snowflake.......perhaps one day we will get some really loud spots - but they have all been wonderful temperaments and so versatile. The Dash from my nickname is now a dressage horse in Surrey, and doing very well I understand.
Sally, if you are a NR'r then show yourself......and a photo of your wonderful boy.......if you don't I will!!!:p :p

Appies rock! And I had the good fortune to go to the New Zealand National Appaloosa show and hang out with over 100 of them from around the country! Wow, I never realised how many appaloosa owners there are on NR. Perhaps Peace really is right, they are trying to take over the world! (Inside joke, sorry! ;) )

I share an Appy, and she is very versatile. She used to be an endurance horse, was trained Western and Enlish, she is a good jumper and (with a better rider than I am) looks amazing on the flat too.
