View Full Version : chestnut roan + rubicano?

Reading (or rather, studying :-) chev's mails about roaning vs sabinino vs rabicano made me wonder whether my gelding has the rabicano gene as well as the roan. The chestnut roan is rather obvious, but I understand true roan is uniform over the body; his hind quarters show much stronger roaning, patterned differently from the rest. It doesn't show in this picture, but his tail has some white, or perhaps cream, as well as the chestnut and black.
Is this possible?

Hi,
couldn't comment on his genes but could he have some appaloosa in his make up? his lighter hind quarters remind me of it... I had a roan who was similar and wasn't spotty, he had the white sclera (?spelling) though.
He's a nice looking horse.

Interesting that you'd ask about the Appy possibility. I actually wanted to ask for opinions on his possible breeding in a seperate thread. He's supposed to be a Boerperd cross. The Boerperd is a South African breed, a smallish but sturdy no-nonsense horse developed for farm work, comparible to the Morgan. A quick Google search brought up this site with some examples
http://www.waitalittle.co.za/Boerperd.HTM.
Now what the 'cross' bit could be is anyone's guess. My instructor said she thinks there's some Appy in him. Would you think so from his conformation? Perhaps I should rather post this in a new thread, I've got pics showing his conformation more clearly.
PS; thanks for the compliment, I'm a very very proud mommy :)

I never heard of those before - beautiful horses (pity the rider looks down so much!).
Appys seem to vary too much to say from his conformation whether thats the cross.. i wouldn't know! He is young still?

Yes, he's 3 going 3-and-a-half, never could figure out his proper birth date. His proportions are still very foalish, even when I compare him so some other horses of about the same age. He's filled out a lot in the last 2 moths or so, though.

Well, he definitely has classic roan in there :) . I don't think he has rabicano - his tail doesn't seem to have any of the typical striping you'd see with that gene (it's called 'coon tail', because of the distinctive white stripes that are seen on the dock) in spite of the obvious extra roaning.
I think he has a blanket pattern going on there to be honest - he does look like he might have a couple of spots hidden under the roan on his quarters too. So... blanket pattern with classic roan would be my guess. :)
