I don't mean to be discouraging, but if you need to ask this question, do you think you might need to swot up a bit before getting a horse?
Maybe a riding school near you is holding a Horseowner's course, where you could find out all you need before taking on such a responsibility.
Good luck with the parents.........

Being a bit of a disorganized person, I think this is a fair enough question. Heck, I always forget something important when I go on vacation, so I understand the need for a comprehensive list.

But, JumperGirl, perhaps you could make it a little easier for people responding by starting the list. Also, would you be keeping the horse at home or boarding it?

HI,
sorry, i guess I didnt mae it very clear, lol

Well, im not asking this question because I have no clue, I know probably most things i would need, but its very possile for me to forget stuff!!!!!!!!

I would probably be boarding it, or possibly keeping it at my aunts house, but proly boarding.

hmm lets see-

I know i would need-

grooming stuff
halter
tack........
blankets
feed! lol
worming stuff
other medicines, anyibiotics for emergencies etc.
shipping boots
boots for excercise
tons more, but its kinda hard to just think of stuff at a given time.

Would you be using a saddle and bridle too? Also, fly spray might be a need if you live in a place where the flies are heavy. I know the horses around here probably couldn't survive without fly spray! :) And thats about all I can think of right now. :) Good luck with getting a horse! And if you do get one, let us all know what he/she is like!!! :)

(p.s. Do you have a horse in mind yet? )

Tack: Saddle (stirrups, stirrup leathers, girth), bridle (noseband, bit, reins), numnah (saddle pad), boots or wraps (not a necessity, but could be useful), halter(s) (might want more than one if your horse is fiesty or if you plan to show), lunge line (if you can borrow, do so), crop/whip (if you need one), blankets (winter, and if you want to a fly sheet/mask).

Grooming: Dandy brush, body brush, face brush (I think one is important because they are really soft), hoof pick, spounges (one for dock/private parts, and one for nose/eyes), shampoo and washing brush (if you plan to give him baths ;)).

Health: First aid kit (bandages, scissors, ointments, etc, etc), wormers, feed (if not provided)- hay and grain, etc., bedding (if not provided)- straw/rubber matting/peat moss.

There's the basics, but I can tell you that I'm probably forgeting a bunch! If you can, start collecting the general items now (grooming stuff, a halter, a saddle pad, some polos to start off with, etc.), so you don't go broke when the time comes!! Hope this helps in your quest!

I can stil remember the stuff I had with my first horse.

Headcollar and rope,
Saddle and bridle (and all the associated bits)
Hoof pick and a brush!

Human first aid kit can double for a while so long as it has lots of cotton wool!;)

No bandages, no rugs, no lunge line, no shampoo, (washing up liquidworks just as well) No saddle cloth, no fly spray, no hoof oil, no feed supplements.

Don't be wooed by the horsey adverts, you don't NEED half what they say you do. Go with what you need, not what you want or think you need, that way owning a horse can be cheap!;)

Ya, when i put tack...... i didnt feel like putting saddle, bridle, numnah etc.

Thanks a bunch.

I havwe some stuff, but not much
i have a part grooming kit, with a dandy brush, curry comb, two hoof picks, soft brush, sponge, and i already have a crop, but i want to get a dressage whip sometime soon, i find them easier, and they dont seem like youre "whacking" your horse, lol.

I also want to get a cool saddle pad or something. that I can just use, because the one i take lessons with sometimes gets dirty, (i know, not bad) but i just like a clean one. lol
I live in Ontario, and I owuld definately need fly spray!

THanks a lot, ya see, i knew most of the things, but when you just try to think of them all of a sudden, you miss a LOT!

oh, and crazyforanimals-
THanks for the good luck! ill need it!!
And no, I dont have a horse in mind, im working on parents!!
RIght now theyre saying, maybe in a couple years, so I might as well be ready, right?

Well, thanks a bunch! anyone else who has some, feel free! ill make a list, and put it somewhere for that time when I need it!! ***fingers crossed***

I think that the easiet thing to do is get a horsey mail order catalogue and look through that making a list of the things you think you would need as you go. Robinson's is a good one. (if you do this you can price it all at the same time so you'll know roughly how much money you'll need to spend.

Hi, you need lots of stuff, but start with the basics the grooming kit the blankets, food and bucket etc. I assume you are keeping it in stables (so first you need to check them out before you do anything else). If they are good they'll help you with what you need to buy. If you haven't kept a horse before go on a course then you'll know your doing things right. Also you need insurance unless of course you leasing it which is quite common anywhere except in the UK where horse leasing doesn't happen so much as it does in the states. Good Luck !! :D

Life is like riding a horse it has its ups and downs.;)

Its a good idea to price it all too prior to getting involved as you will need much of this stuff prior to even seeing horses to buy if you are definitely going ahead.

try http://www.rideaway.co.uk if you are in the UK they have a good range with cheap-expensive in each item.

It all adds up. To a LOT of money.

My friend has a horse and a boat - he often jokes that riding is simply a land based way of throwing away money when he isn't throwing it away at sea!

HI!

thats a big help, i might just print this out!!

I have looked through a lot of sites on the internet, BUT all most all of them are american, and im VERY bad at exchange rates!

I live in Canada.

I might try to find a canadian site, or do the math of the exchange rates, and iill make a list of essentials, and maybe just, you know, leave it sitting around for my parents too see!! lol.

Okay, im just going to make a list here for myself, of kind of essentials that i would want.lol :)

Grooming kit (including extra bits etc.)
Tack (saddle, etc)
blankets (i dot think i would need a lot, because i dont think i would want to clip)
first aid kit
halter
lead rope
lunge line (maybe if i had to)
lunging cavesson (possibly)
fly mask
medicines, worming stuff etc.
fly spray
water bucket, feed bucket
boots (for the horse)
theres a lot more, but i gotta go to bed, brothers bugging me!!!

I have been around my barn and others a lot, so I know quite a bit, not EVERYTHING< but no one knows everything, right? youre always learning!!

Thanks a lot!! and wish me luck!!!!!! :P

well im looking for a horse to buy right now and have started buying bits and pieces already before i actually buy the horse and end up bankrupt!:D

I found the easiest thing to do is to just start with the grooming kit and first aid kit and riding accessories for yourself because when you finally get yoru horse any spare money will be shelled out on the horsey and not you :D

I just bought a hoof pick, 2 brushes, curry comb, a round headed curry comb, 2 sponges and ehm...this comb that you use for horses/dogs when they have long hair (im buying an icey and this comb is brilliant on their winter coats, especailly when shedding!)
i dont intend on buying any more tools for grooming until i actually get my horse and discover that i need something more..but right now this is all i use to groom my loan horse

i just got once a month to the horse shop an buy something necessary

I recently wrote out a list of things that I'd need if I was a horse ownwe, from clothing for me to mucking out tools. I totted it all up and it came to a whopping £1642.37! And that was without the cost of the horse, stableling, feed, and insurance! So I've started to tick items off the list as I get them. I've managed to tick off five so far! And thats all stuff for me! I used to have a grooming kit but I took it to the stables a couple of summers ago when we got to look after the ponies in the holidays and it got all mixed up with the stables grooming kits. So I need to start over on that one again!
Still, the thought is that by the time I do get a horse I'll have a good wee collection of little bits and bobs. And I'd try to do a deal where by I got the horses tack and rugs included in the price.

Hi,
thanks for replying.

i have my own grooming kit,
i have-
a dandy brush
curry comb
bady brush
2 hoof picks
a scrub brush thingy that i just have stuffed in there
and a SUPER soft face brush i got at the royal winter fair.

i also have a little pony bridle that my bro's g/f gave to me
its pink and green, so its cute even if i never use it, but it could come in useful in case a bridle breaks and you need a replacement for a short time, well i dunno, i just think its cute!!!

thanks again
