Right since i'm off to Bishop Burton College :) there have said that having the done the Ride and Road Safety Test will be good before i start. I have been in touch with another college much nearer to were i live East Durham Houghall community college which does this course. And so i will be starting the course in March/April and i have no idea what i will be doing :o . So i was wondering if there was anybody who is doing the course and has done the course to tell me what type of stuff you do practical/ theory wise and if there is a test at the end. Any info please thanks Kirstie

i did mine with pony club.
we did some theory stuff about hats and the law, and what to do, then we practiced on the horses around a course. we then had to go out on the roads on the horse infront of an examiner.
you have to walk past road signs, throught traffic lights, past cars, dismount, lead, and mount on the off side. things like that.

I did mine a few months ago.
The riding is pretty basic, just walk and trot. They are very nit picky, you have to look behind you around every 3 strides  its crazy!
Its more about learning how to pass the test, as opposed to anything exciting :p

You have to get Riding and Roadcraft book, its got all the road safety theory stuff in it.
You sit a theory paper of i think 15 questions. if you pass the test you then do your mock road exam. There will be junctions and stuff laid out with poles , then if oyu pass tht you get to go on the road and do a little test part.
we had 1 night theory training and 2 ridden practice sessions then the test. Although the questions were not overly difficult you should read the riding and roadcraft book as you can get asked about stopping distances for cars, what different road signs mean etc.
As said mostly watch your hand signals are clear, and in time, you keep looking around. in the mock road you have to dismount, walk along a bit ,remount (we were allowed a mounting block for this part)

thanks i wondering about buying the Riding and Roadcraft book but it sounds a good enough book to help me pass my theory part of the exam. I was aslready told that it was quite easy to pass the test as all you need is basic knowledge thanks. :)

hmm, i wouldnt say it was that easy to pass. Easy in theory, but they are so pedantic its unbelievable! They fail quite a lot of people for really silly little things!

I know a lot of people who fail because they forget to do the looking back, signalling etc. It's easy to do especially when you're nervous so make sure that you know what they're expecting from you, read the book, get some tuition and practise, practise, practise so that it becomes second nature to you.
I did mine ages ago. We did it as part of a two hour 'lesson which included riding, stable management and riding and road safety. BECAUSE we'd been drilled week after week after week most of us passed (hooray). I'm sure, though, that if I hadn't have done those lessons that I could have easily stuffed it up!

in the mock tests we did before the real thing, i often failed on observation. generally looking behind ok, but i walked straight thru a red light!!
also, when your doing the field test, and your turning onto a new 'road' make your turn square. dont cut any corners, otherwise  ... oh carry a whip, but dont signal with it, make sure thumbs on top of your signals aswell. :D
