Does anyone know a website that has patterns for blankets(either turnout or saddle blankets) and other things for your horse? Is it possible to make a waterproof sheet without a real heavy duty sewing machine?

I have used patterns from a company called Suitability. I made saddle blankets and breeches with a regular sewing machine.
For some reason their website suitability.com doesn't come up right now. Try

Seeing you are in the US I was about to suggest Suitability too :) Loads of good horsey stuff patterns..I wish we had an equivalent over here in the UK.
A lightweight waterproof sheet should be no problem with an ordinary sewing machine.

We've used a Suitability pattern, and it was pretty simple, although Mum said she didn't recognise one or two of the methods used as she's an English seamstress so there are a few differences.
The only thing I would say for any UK peeps thinking of trying it, they got the length of the hacking jacket a bit short for a traditional English jacket, obviously they went for the American fashion as that's where they're based, so I'm not sure what other differences there'll be on other items. :)

You can get some Suitability patterns for riding wear from Penny Housden - google "Side saddle lady" (no relation to me). She might be prepared to order specially for you.
If making a waterproof sheet bear in mind that you will have to take steps to prevent it leaking through the stitching. Rubber adhesive, such as Copydex, painted on the seams might do the trick, for example.

If anyone's interested Suitability make a pattern for a side saddle apron (lent mine to a "friend" and never got it back - grr!) and their hacking jacket pattern is very good. It will adapt from ordinary to cut-away making it useful for SS habit making.
