Hello Everyone! I will take my first English lesson in exactly one week and am so excited about it. I can hardly wait! I had a horse when I was a young girl, about 15 years ago (that makes me 26 now), and rode Western quite frequently. However, since then I have not had the opportunity to ride much and have never tried English. So, I decided now is the time to start. Does anyone have any advice, especially about what to expect at my first lesson? How have you adult beginners progressed through your lessons and what helps you the most. Thanks in advance!

Hi Mable,

Well I'm one lesson down, several thousand to go! All I will say is go for it! I had never even been around horses but a friend of mine rides and I went with her to her lesson for 3 weeks to see the school and get a little more comfortable around those big animals.

My instructor is cool; just easing me into things gently with a nice armchair of a horse :) Hope yours is as considerate. (Horse and instructor)

I've not set myself any (great) expectations; just seeing if I take to it and if so then I'll see how far I think I want to take it.

I think if you don't set too many goals, just go at your own pace, you'll be fine.

Good luck, and good riding!

Paul

Oh, you'll have a great time!

Personally, I think adults can progress just as well as kids. But, like Paul said, it will be best not to be too focused on measuring progress. It comes in fits and starts.

The thing that has helped me most is to keep it fun. A little humility also comes in handy, in the first lesson and always.

The important thing is not to give up- ever. Riding is hard, and you know that, but you have to work through that. I don't have too much advice... but what to expect.
It really depends on the barn. However, you'll probably be shown how to tack up and mount, and then be led around. It won' t be all intense, it'll get you use to horses.
