Technically they are partbred Arabs but the actual percentage of Arab blood is very high.

Shagya arabs are multi-talented horse, that is eager to learn. The shagya arab closely resembles the pure-bred arab but on average they are slightly larger and stronger. There limbs are sounder than those of the true arab.

Name: Shagya Arabian
Approxiamate Size: 15hh
Colour Variations: Mostly grey
Place of Origin: Hungary

Hot blooded. Very good temperament. Uses: Hacking

Shagya Arabian not established until the 19th century.

The Hungarians were trying to selectively breed a new type of Arab horse, with a larger frame and build than the traditional Arab, but with all its excellent qualities.

In 1833 the foundation sire Shagya was imported from Syria to the stud. Other important stallions in the development of the breed were:
Siglavy Bagdady
Gazal
Kemir
Koheilan
Jussuf
O'Bajan
Kuhaylan Zaid
Mersuch

The Shagya Arab was not named untill 1982.

Like the Arabian:
speed and stamina
lively and energetic temperament

More info:
useful versatile horses both for riding and harness
highly attractive headds
dark eyes
strong fairly sloping shoulders
broad deep chest
muscular quarters
very correct confirmation of the legs
good performers in competitive fields

Hope this helped.

my mare traces back to Koheilan, and she is Crabbet bred arab, but she is a lot stockier than "normal" arabs, and she is as tough as a native, if not tougher. Vimto, can you email that bit to me, PM me for my email addy.
