maddie is still not keen on her chaff and beet, ive added more chaff, less beet, more beet less chaff, fiddled about with the beet consistancy, and shes still chucking it on the floor and leaving it to eat her hay.
she also seems to have dropped a little weight.
i was thinking hi-fibre cubes, but is their anything else thats not too concentrated that will help keep her weight on?

Hi, I'v just started feeding Allen & Page high fibre pencils to my elderly mare as she is having trouble eating hay, apparently (been told by Allen & Page) they are not classed as a concentrate and you can feed as much as you like, you add water, which makes it nice and easy for her to eat they are low in sugar and very low in starch. I also feed Top Spec conditioning flakes which she loves (she can be fussy) to help keep her weight up - you don't have to feed as high a quantity of this as other feeds.

Have you tried oil? It is a source of high calories without adding a lot of bulk or making them "hot"(is that what you mean by concentrate?) This is my 500th post by the way, :)

unfortunatly oil makes her loose. by concentrates i mean id rather not feed her mix and such, im slightly worried about mix as it sent one of my other horses mad, but anything forage based is fine:D

No Angel, I am currently still in that stage of relief, our old boy stopped eating his hard feed a while back and due to bad teeth he can't eat hay (a bit worrying coming into winter) I tried all sorts but like you didn't want to give him too much concentrate but adding a mix seemed to help for a while, but he was still leaving half his feed which even with the mix got progressivly worse.

I just started him on a Probiotic, he now (back to just chaff and beet mostly) gobbles his feed down and his insides seem a lot better for it :) before he was constantly loose, it was all down his legs and made him sore, you know the scenario, all that has stopped and he now really tucks into his grub, and its not that expensive either, I saw a difference in two days.

I have started using Biotal Equine Gold, I have even put my other boy on it I was so impressed, I figure it can't hurt :)

I got mine last week from 'supplement solutions' - http://www.supplementsolutions.co.uk/shop/index.php?osCsid=1fc1769cdcc680a0e46345a0a40544fc&manufacturers_id=26&osCsid=1fc1769cdcc680a0e46345a0a40544fc
Their price was good and I ordered monday lunchtime and it was delivered to my door wednesday before 10 am, really impressed.
