(Have I posted this before?)

A paste of sulphur powder and liquid paraffin (medicinal stuff, not the stuff you put in space heaters) mixed together and applied to lesions lifts the scabs, disinfects them and heals up even really recalcitrant cases. Sulphur was the active ingredient in early antibiotics used in the pre-penicillin era.

Last year the WH was completely clipped out for hunting and had a really bad case of mud rash (his first) which wouldn't heal whatever we did until we found the sulphur & liq para remedy. This year we didn't clip his legs and despite mud in the hunting field and a sea of mud in the turn-out field he has been clear. (Obviously need to clip if he's got it in order for remedies to get at skin)

Bought the sulphur powder and the liquid paraffin at the tack shop. Comes in large containers but is quite cheap.Use a clean plastic tub, put some powder in it and add LP slowly mixing until you have a consistency that will spread on the legs easily but is thick enough not to run off. You'll see when it's right. If the rash is bad or the leg is very hairy, clip round the area and spread the gloop on working it in. Wear rubber gloves as it is quite difficult to wash off your hands if you don't have access to warm water. No need to scrub the scabs with Hibiscrub as the gloop will loosen the scabs and you can get them off easily without hurting the horse. A guide to its efficacy - all the tack shops in a 5 mile radius (a lot) sold out of both ingredients once to word got out! Delia Smith and the cranberries again!

Do you think I could use just the liquid parafin? I cannot get the sulphur here.

The LP is mainly a carrier for the sulphur although it is quite a good waterproofer.

Have you tried chemists/pharmacists? Or is it a legal thing, as Sulphur can be used in explosives, I think (Chemistry-numpty speaking).
