i have always set my sidepull 4 finger up from the nostirl on my cob, but it sits slightly higher on my tb, i think its because the bridle is too big for her.
ive just seen these pictures, which one is correct?

i'd fit to the top one. the best way to check is to feel down the nose bone, and you will feel that a bit under where a caveson noseband sits, it goes soft - that is the end of the nose bone and the begining of the cartilage, so you want it above that.

here is a picture - you can see the black bit on the nose, and that the noseband is above it. and here for the text with it explaininign the numbers

the premaxillary notch is what you are looking at.

ah, i have a dr cook bridle, and i fit my sidepull slightly higher than that as the dr cook sits quite low on the nose. im thinking the top one looks very high.

i wouldn't go quite as high as the grey horse, but not as low as some of the others. i've often used the low rope round the nose, in addition to a headcollar, to control bargey horses on the ground while re-educating them, and it really does cut breathing off quite dramatically when tightened. i wouldn't like to ride like that - i've used it as an emergency measure.
