My friend is currently looking for a cob, I see many of you have lovely cobs.

Have you found them privately?
Have you gone to a dealer?
Can you recommend a dealer? One that you have used personally and have been impresses by their integrity?

My friend had a bad experience with her last horse and does not want to purchase the wrong horse. She is primarily looking for something safe, hack out alone and in company, 15hh-ish middle-heavy weight. She really needs a confidence builder.

If you see any ads around(area unimportant as will travel) with anything you think may be suitable - drop me a line!

Thanks

Had been looking for a safe cob myself for the last 3 months and have had several experiences not all good.

It seems that cobs are the 'in' thing at the moment and people are asking silly money for them.

We had a cob vetted from a dealer - we new his history (coincidentaly) had him vetted and he didn't quite pass the vetting fully due to lameness. He was on the website again within a week - no mention of lameness of course - sold him for £4500!!!

I've had a bit of luck recently - I placed a wanted add in the NR wanted section and a few people got in touch - one we are pursuing to vetting stage this week!!

Cheryl at www.irish-cobs.co.uk was very nice to deal with and her cobs are reasonably priced - based in Kent - we didn't buy from her in the end, though.

Good luck with the search.

Paddy: No Bertha: half and half. bought her from a dealer, but knew her for well over a year before she was considered for sale.
Have you gone to a dealer?
yes. both Paddy and Bertha.
Can you recommend a dealer? One that you have used personally and have been impresses by their integrity?
sorry, the ones i know its best off knowing them and the horses before buying.

i needed the same, and one of the dealers got me Paddy in especially for me. 'Patrick' came from the other side of Lincs.

Thanks - Cobs do really seem to be 'in' at the moment.

I was surprised at the prices!

She is going to view a mare this week so hopefully she will be the 'one!'

my cob came from a showjumping dealer. he'd a shipment of jumpers coming over from ireland and i think toby was stuck on to make up numbers  i can recomend this dealer, but as i said he's a jumer dealer and can't guarentee to have cobs in. he's also in southern scotland so probably too far ;)

because cobs have now become fashionable their prices have gone silly. don't let your friend pay over the odds. a lot of these cob dealers sites have overpriced horses with less than perfect conformation. buyer beware!

i'm glad i got my lad before cobs became fashionable. these days he'd be worth 4-5 times what i paid for him.

Alice is right. I am is search of a cob but found that there weren't that many in my area they were all TB's :( So I decided not to limit myself to just cobs and kind of just went for the native breeds. Their the best if your looking for a chunky breed. 'Safecobs' has some really nice horses on but they are so expensive :( Thats the only downfall though. It's ok if you want to pay about £4000 for a horse but my maximum price is £2500 so you have to look on the other site's.

Here are a few that I use

HorseDeals have some lovely cobs in their 'Cobs' section at the moment. If I wasn't so poor I'd definatley be tempted by lots of them.

I own a 8 month old cob which i brought from a gypsy and ive got to say he is the most laid back and placid horse ive ever met. At the age of 8 months i would trust him with a baby. I paid next to nothing for him and got him at 4 months and wouldn't give him up for the world.

I bought my Cob Baileigh from a dealer, who has now moved, but if you hear of a dealer by the name of "Tom Dunbar" - I had a very positive experience with him. He had LOTS of cobs for sale, was offering them for £500 straight off the field or £650 ''trained''. The one I wanted (Baileigh) has just arrived, and was £650, he was honest about the fact he didn't know the animal that well, that he'd just got him a few days before. He let me try him out, didn't try to persuade or force me into buying that particular horse, instead he said after I'd tried him out, that I could go look at the horses in the field, and see if I wanted one of those, and also offered me the option of trying out a few others, if I felt the one I'd tried wasn't suitable.

While I'm always wary of dealers, I found that he was eager to please me as a customer, and of course he wanted to make a sale, but he wanted to make sure I was happy with my purchase. He also gave me free delivery on the horse, and the option of returning him if in 2 weeks I wasn't happy. In the end, I bought the first cob I looked at - and have been happy with him ever since.

However, when hunting for my horse Rowen, I looked at few cobs, one was at a farm outside Glasgow, and it was the worst dealer I've ever met. They were trying to sell the most bedraggled animals I've ever seen, and tried to convince me to buy a horse with only 1 ear and scar tissue all the way down her side, saying she was a sound ride but had just had an ''accident''.

To be honest, I prefer dealers to private owners, since dealers don't fuss as much as private owners. I've had good experiences with dealers - and the ones I've bought from - which has only been 3, mind you :-)

I would be careful of prices, because Cobs are popular at the moment, people are saying you can't get them cheaper than £1000 - as one dealer told me, I pointed out that I knew fine well I could get a cob for about half of that - then did. The expensive cobs are - from what I saw and experienced, no better than the cheap ones. So I would shop around a lot, there are plenty of cobs - and a lot going for the £500-£800 mark. And to add, I bought my cob in 2002, when they were popular (especially with Americans) - so it possible to find a bargain amidst all these over priced animals.

I'd also recommend buying Horse and Hound, and keeping an eye on their £1000 and under sales column.

of the two cobs that I've had, one I knew and bought from a friend, the other I bought privately from the internet, both were sensational, great fun, up for anything but very sane and adored kids hanging off them !
Just bought my new girl from horsemart, and so far she is an absolute angel- keep pinching myself to see if I have really been this lucky !
I'd reccomend you place an ad saying exactly what you are looking for , I was offered loads of smashing horses.
