Just wondering how much money people have left to live on after they have paid their mortgage etc.

I can't do diy livery as I work full time and sometimes have to work late to meet deadlines. I am considering moving to a competion yard which would cost me about £600 a month inclusive of shoes, insurance etc.

My own housing and bills come to £600 and my take home salary is £1750 would you recon I would struggle on £550 a month for my extras. I would like to continue to have at least one night out a week and the occasional holiday:D

Ditto Bozzy. Have to forego holiday this year as just bought a new box. Any spare cash pays for hay straw etc, but you know what they're worth it:D

i only pay 1 lot of yard rent (my mum pays for Bonnie ;) ). so i'm about £80 livery, £50 other stable bills (this is split with my mum), £100 rent and £40 council tax, £30 household bills (living costs split with OH). so after paying all that i've usually about £550 left over. although when i've paid a visit to the tack shop that makes a big dent in it  don't do overdraughts or loans or credit cards and i've zero student debt. thank god my dad taught me to manage my money well :p

edited to add, i'm still a student on a PG stipend so don't get a huge wage each month.

I think mine is a negative figure every month!

never had spends so rarely holidays or expensive nights out!

every spare penny gets put in the lorry fund!

editted to say: BUT THEY'RE WORTH IT!

Wave goodbye to hols and nights out!:p :D You'll soon realise that jods are this seasons must have!! Seriously, be prepared - it always costs more than you think - whatever you budget for - add £50 a month on top for just in cases ie, vets bills or that rug you need or back specialist or hoof supplement, etc etc. All worth it though!:D

You must have heard that there IS a way to make a small fortune when you're into horses.

Start with a VERY LARGE fortune! :D

So true ... so true ....

If I actually looked at my accounts I would, realistically, not be able to afford Saff but somehow you do. I don't know how you do it but you somehow find the money from somewhere.

I recently went to the bank to get a bankers draft (horse related!). The guy behind the desk asked me if I had any savings. I looked him straight in the eye and said "I've got a horse". He just said "oh" and didn't pursue it :D

I'm left with £200 a month maximum, and petrol and the farrier every other month has to come out of that:eek:

I don't have foreign holidays, haven't had a 'new' (second hand but new to me!) car for over ten years, never buy clothes except essentials (thermal socks, johds etc!) and very very rarely have an expensive night out. But as someone else so rightly said.. they're worth it!:D

Yep, we get about £20 "leftovers" per week for birthdays, treats, holidays, car tax, MoT's, Christmas  (OMG - I'm scaring myself!!!) or any other unforeseen expenditure....

(but I have Cherry and when I am out riding I can't spend money!!! Yeay!)

Going out? Don't need to, I sit at my pc and "socialise" hehe.....

Happy to see everyone is in the same boat as me!! Everyone keeps telling me to get rid of my horse...and asking, "Isnt it silly that the horse/dog/cat are well-fed and you have no money to eat?!" But I manage!!
Ive cut it down to the minimum... I found an amazing barn for my horse at only $150/month. He's out 24/7 and is extremely healthy..and with a wonderful temperament. He only needs the farrier about three/four times a year (he's barefoot) at $25/visit. The vet comes once/twice a year and he is $60/visit. I do all worming and everything elsemyself! So.... this is not too bad. Yes, my checking account is always negative but I think Im managing to have a horse on am amazing price!!
So.... the only thing that's killing me is that I had to discontinue my lessons. If I could manage to make about $200/month extra (they arent this much, but this is to provide me with a little "cushion"), I will start them up again... at the expense of anything else.....!

Its beans on toast all the way for me I never have any money left at the end of the month.
Although I have just cut my fuel bill from £200+ per month to £40 by getting an economical car.
I have less left monthly than what you have so I think I could manage with that quite easily. :)

Blimey, I'd be very worried if I couldn't live on £550 a month just for "extras".

I'm afraid I can't answer this question, as to work it out would be bad for my mental health

From reading this i think i must get of quite lightly?
My rent for two stables and two acres of land at the back of my house is £60 a mth. I have a 15h Andalusian mare and a 13.2 NFx mare. The farrier comes out every 8weeks costing me £55 for Jasmine (15h) and £27.50 for Kelly (NFx). I buy straw and hay off a farmer down the road for £1 a bale for straw and £2 for hay, delivered and all quality stuff. Bulk load costs me £350max for the whole winter. They are stabled at night for approx 4-5mths a yr weather dependant. Hard feed Apple Moli-Chaf & Cooling Mix with Garlic and Oil, apples and carrotts. Bout 2 tubs garlic powder, 4 bags of moli chaff and 4 cooling mix for the 4-5mths - costing £50max for winter.
Horse Ins i pay yearly costing £168. I have also just bought a horse lorry costing £1500. But am no longer in debt.

I would love to have £550 left for 'extras' - I normally still have some month left over at the end of the money :D

currently I'm trying to figure out my finances as well.

I'm >< that close to buying (rather, having my brother buy me) a horse and am trying to figure out my finances.

I currently pay $200 monthly for my car and cellphone bill.
Then board would be $400 a month, including lessons.
And I'd need to add about $100 a month for extra expenses.

So in all I'm looking at $700, to get by. Right now I'm 18, in college, and working on solely a part time job. Okay i'll stop now, I'm giving myself a headache just thinking about it.

All I can say is - thank god I still live at home :D

I reckon I could easily live on £550 a month (assuming I wasn't living at home). If you find you're struggling, just cut down how long you go out for, or what you buy, the expensive parts of what you eat, or where you go. :)

I find I'm always in the negative numbers!! Holidays, nights out - I'll just go and get the dictionary!!:p I am glad I'm not the only one who's animals eat better than they do!!:D :D I think we are all what the rest of the world calls English eccentrics!!

Money? Remind me once again what that is please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously I am lucky cos YO letsme off mostof thelivery charges in return for farm sitting when she is away and for helping her out atfarmers markets so costs are really just for hay and straw! However the travel cost are somewhat OTT aswe haven't got a lorry of a trailer, we have to hire these for showing trips etc, but the upside is I have a lovely horse that my mum bought me, and I have 46 acres to ride on, a school that cost me next to nothing YO other half and mine built it for me! Who needs holidays when you can forget your troubles hackingout for an hour or three!

I live at home so I only have 2 fixed bills a month...livery bill and mobile phone bill. £72 livery and £23 on my phone so that's £95 a month.

I also have to pay for petrol for my car and any nights out, things for college, clothes or whatever I need for myself. I probably spend about £10 a week on petrol and I hardly ever go out or buy clothes so maybe £10 a week on myself too. So that's another £80 an month.

Hmm...I work part time as much as possible and my salary depends on how many hours I do (not many when college work is knocking on the door). I'm only contracted to 8 a week although I usually work overtime to get some extra cash. I guess I must be earning over £175 a month as I do seem to be keeping in the black. Sounds like not a lot of money to earn but it does me fine :) No idea what I'd do if I left home...get a full time job I guess with much better pay.

Still money doesn't matter to me as long as Twig is happy :D

thank god im only 15 :p , i dont know how my dad manages with rent, a mortgage and pep ;) !! ive got savings ive probably have to dent into.....although im very tight with my money, its the way ive been brought up. I think £550 a month will be more than enough, I find that I gardly have enough time for anything else with horses anyway:p

well my parents pay $40 p/w for Red and i only add $15 onto that but then again i dont exactly earn the worlds biggest wage ($90p/w- im in year 10!) but i still get about $70 to spend on myself

SO1, I think that would be a real struggle. When you think about it, the £550 is not really just for 'extras'. You'll need food, clothes, car (plus petrol and insurance), pension payments, save some money just in case the washing machine breaks down and you need a plumber etc. Also, you will probably need to spend more on your horse than just the livery costs. You will need tack, rugs etc, and you will probably want to have lessons as well.

I am sorry about the pessimistic post, but realistically I think it would be quite difficult. I am in a similar financial situation, and I wouldn't be able to afford a horse (I share). Somehow the money disappears, even though I am extremely careful about my spending.

£600 a months is quite lot for livery though. I live in a very expensive area, and my yard with great facilities is about £80 a week for full livery. Perhaps you can find a cheaper full livery service somewhere?

Edited to add: Oops I just realised I've replied to a very old thread. Sorry!

Like most others on here, I used to manage with a lot less than that every month! Who needs clothes etc. anyway? That was how I realised I didn't want to ride any more - suddenly I wanted all that money for something else, where before, I only earned money to keep a horse!

I'm afraid I can't answer this question, as to work it out would be bad for my mental health

Ditto that! I refuse to run our finances - last time I tried to I ended up having a panic attack and narrowly escaped a trip to the psychiatric wing of the hospital! When OH was working, we had enough to stay on top of everything, but now we're in some serious minus figures. Realistically, if OH is not deemed well enough to return to work soon (another one with mental health issues:rolleyes: ), I'll have to get a sharer to help with Sal's costs. This month we're living on borrowed money from our mums!

Erm...I won't ask!! ;) :D
Not got a horse at the mo but I'm going to be sharing one at the end of the summer. Have been trying desperately to work out my finances as to what I can afford to do with him. Really want to get a trailer or lorry but need to pay the student loan back first!!

Am planning on buying my next pony in the autumn (job hunting at mo!) have worked out costs etc and seem to be ok, but worried that i've got it wrong somehow, will get pony and have huge diaster on my hands! According to my calculations will have bout £20 left a month!
Does £15,000 seem like enough a year to run car, pay rent (own small flat) bills etc and pony on DIY?!! Does anyone else manage on similar?!!
