I share a pony, she used to be fine hacking out and she didn’t mind going front or back but now she will nap when I try to take her out at the front of the ride. She only does it with one horse which is lower in the herd than she is. I’ve tried everything smacking her with my whip then she tries to buck , talking to her calmly and nothing is working. What should I do because its getting to the stage when I don’t like or enjoy taking her out for hacks, I would school her but our school cannot be used in winter. HELP!!

There are three main reasons why i horse naps:
The horse dislike the activity you are doing
The horse has never been taught to go forward and/or leave his herd.
The horse has sufficent confidence in/respect for the rider
Not my words the book
Spend as mcuh time as possible with your horse and see yourself as the leader. Attitude is everything!emeber:Calm, firm and postive. Retrain leading in hand.
Ride with another horse and gradually get further away from each other. Mayb spilt up on the homeward route and praise your horse with every step forwards, but correct him with a firm "no" when he naps. Leading out (with a firm nose chain for safety) helps many horses.
If he neaps at something frighhening lety him examine it. If he spins around apply firm aids to hold him facing the right direction. Otherwise, spin in around a few times doing circles and then face where you want to go and try again. If he runs back, strongly ask for forward movements or demand some steps of turn on the forehand to get control of his hindquarters.
In dangerous situations like traffic, you may have to turn him a few times on your command so he thinks its your idea, then go back to way you have come. Return with another at a quieter time.
