Wonder if you guys can help? A friends horse is lame on his left hind, the vet came to visit yesterday said it could be a number of things including arthiritis, stifle or hock damage or potentially stringold (It sounds something like this!?) and warrants further investigation

Any idea what stringold/stringhold is, I cannot find anything about it on the web, probably because I have not spelt it correctly.

Cheers,

stringholt/string halt/stringhalt/shivers-thought to be caused by nerve malfunction, most common in draught types apparently. the horse snatches the hind leg up, in severe cases they kick their bellys. shivers is where the leg trembles when held up, also they can snatch it up. symptoms are worse in both cases when the horse is made to reverse, and when they first start to walk off from halt.
my horse is a shiverer, Supreme Rock is too, so David H informs me, so we're in good company!
Depends how bad it is as to how much trouble it will cause, some wouldn't touch a stringhalt/shivers horse with a bargepole, mine isn't that bad it doesn't stop him doing anything, jumping, dressage etc.
it is an unsoudness though and a horse with this problem won't pass the vet, but in my opinion it isn't the end of the world.
let us know how she gets on :)

Mine has stringhalt too, only mild though, never stopped him doing anything and wouldn't say it makes him look lame at all
