This morining i went out to feed my mare and she was bleeding from the head right behind her ear there was blood running down the side of her face and i was coverd in it. i cleaned it with proxide [sp?] but it was still bleeding and i couldnt get it to stop. But my mom said i HAD to go to school so i couldnt stop it.
My boyfriend raced back out there when he came to pick me up and it looked like it was drying a little bit. But im so scared she's going to pass out from loss of blood. I know what thats like i cut my wrist on glass before really bad [not intentionally] and i almost passed out.
If its still bad when i get home at like 2:45pm and its only 9:30am now i know i have to call the vet but how fast could they get there and what could they do? Im just so scared and worried about her I have my boyfriend going back around now to check on her and if she's laying down to get my mom at work. But i know they wont get me out of school if something wrong and i dont think they would call the vet. We have no money and my boarder hasnt payed and im just so worried about her and whats going to happen casue i want the best for her and i want her to be safe. i dont want to have to call the vet but what else can i do? besides maybe sticht it? Its about a little less then an inch long and im not sure how deep it was around 6:30am and it was still dark and the lighting in the barn isnt the best.
she was bleeding so bad the worst thing in the world is to have your hands coved in your best horses blood. I stayed clam and pet her next and gave her more oats and corn to munch while i cleaned it but it just would not stop bleeding and i waited until i was in the house to freak out. But to get the proxide and cotton swabs i dont think i've ever ran faster in my entire life.
I figaured out she cut her head on the barn. She likes to rub her head on the walls and the door and the barn shes in is tin/metal and i think she got cut on that but theres not blood on the barn just all the wood and there's no nails and the woods not sharp how can i fix this? Im so glad she's had her tetnious [sp?] shot.
I feel like such an idiot moron and another choice of words for not going out there sooner and at least getting sugar to put on her cut. I know mixed with veidione [sp?] it makes like a sticky sort of bandaid to stop bleeding. but i wasnt really even thinking i was so freaked out. why did she have to get hurt this bad?
thanks guys sorry its long.
Im just really freaked out.
and scared.

Oh dear that's terrible for you. I'm sure it will clot up but perhaps it does need a few stitches, can you call the vet from school or have your mom call and get an appt. set up?

And most vets will wait for the money or take payments so don't worry that.

I know if she seen it she would freak out and tell me i should of done more and called the vet though in which i should have but no one would be there casue' my mom wouldnt of let me stayed home and she wouldnt just let the vet come in her stall or take her out and i cant put a halter on her casue its right on the back part of her ear. i am such an idiot.

its easy to get in a panic with things like this, but it doesn't help to call yourself an idiot - that doesn't help either of you. The most important thing is to sort it, and then learn from the experience !
1) there's the should I/Shouldn't I about calling the vet.
You can't alter that now but you have someone going to check her (which is good) so be prepared to act on that. Even if the cut has clotted, if it is deep you may need to vet out to stitch and give anti-biotics. Given what you've said about where it is, you're going to want it to heal well for future use of halter and bridle.
2) there's your mom.
You say she didn't care and wanted you to just get to school, but you also say "I know if she seen it she would freak out and tell me i should of done more and called the vet though". So next time perhaps you have to do more to get her attention and advice straight off ? It sounds like she would understand more if you did that ?
3) there's the worry about head and halter and vet "she wouldnt just let the vet come in her stall or take her out and i cant put a halter on her casue its right on the back part of her ear."
Well remember that vets deal with all sorts of emergency situations, including ones where the horse isn't all neatly prepared for them. Thats their job !
And finally there is "lessons learnt"...
- its good to have an emergency drill. Write it up and post it in the barn. Then when you panic you can just go read it. Have the vets phone no and contact no for you and so on written down.
- money: do something about the boarder's unpaid bill and do something about an "emergency fund" for yourself
- have a basic first aid kit in the barn. Then you don't have to fetch and carry or remember.
thre's probably more.... but you need to think it through yourself.
In the meantime, I hope it all works out ok for you and your horse.

What a terrible situation to be in.
How old are you?
If I sound harsh, it's not because of you or what you did or didn't do.
You did everything that you could do at that time. And you shouldn't be second guessing yourself or beating yourself up for not having gone up to the stable earlier.
I'm sorry but whenever there's an emergency regarding any living being, that is top priority and you should've gotten support from your parent!
If my son's pet was in a situation that needed immediate attention, maybe I would be sending him to school but I would make every effort to take care of the animal for him!
Sometimes the most superficial cuts can bleed horrendously meaning: it'll look worse than it actually is.
Unfortunatly if it is serious & stitches are needed, depending on the swelling; usually stitches need to be put in within 2 hrs. Don't worry though because if kept clean with water (no peroxide or iodine please as it will kill the new cells) and some cream for cuts (from your vet); the wound will heal from the inside out.
Are there other people around during the day at your stable that can check on your horse? A horse has to loose a very large amount of blood before they go into shock.
So, PLEASE don't beat yourself up, you did what you could & I hope your horse is ok.
Keep us up to date alright?
Take care,
LMS
PS I'm proud of you for keeping your cool around your horse. That was very important!

Forgot to add:
When your vet comes by and you're there (if you're not call him/her after wards) ask questions! That's how you'll learn for any future situation.
Ask:
-How bad is it?
-How do you think it happened?
-Explain everything you did when you found your horse & ask if you could've done more first aid wise.
Hopefully your horse has had a recent tetanus shot? You'll need that info for the vet.
Good luck! I've been in worse situations (punctured eye, ripped knee, hemorrhage from a guttural pouch, to name a few) & the most important things that saved the horse were: promp attention & washing the wound thoroughly, having all shots UTD & keeping my cool.

my boyfriend called me back saying she looked fine to him. but hes no horseperson. but im thankful he checked on her.

Do you have a good relationship with your vet?
What I mean is: when I first started out with my present vet, I had to pay him before he left my property but within a year I was allowed to pay after the visit within a certain amount of time.
Now I have an account with the office.
As long as I can pay (whether it's installments or the whole thing) the bill within a reasonable amount of time, it's fine with them. My latest bill took a year to pay off.
Hopefully things will look better when you check on her this afternoon.
It's a nasty spot to have a cut.

We've changed vets a couple times in the past years. only one of the vets had seen faith since we've gotten her. we have an account i do believe at there office they did metion something of such. We have always paid right on time as well and both vets have known this.
I hope shes doing fine i asked my boyfriend to pick up sponges so i can clean up her face. and some ointment to put on it. should i put like a loop around her neck while i clean her cut or is that even risky?
Can i just call the vet office and ask them questions with out them coming out to my house? Like can i ask them if the cream im using and what i did this moring is right and what i should contiune doing with out them com ing out unless they feel they need too?
I'm always scared of vets.
thanks again

Definatly, Just call the vet, ask them what they think and explain that you don't have the money to pay a big bill at the moment and could he just offer you some advise, they may say they need to come out but that they can do a deal for you to pay a little bit each month like LMS said, I know our vets will.
Cuts always look bad in poor lighting, look at it again this afternoon, clean up around it and gently clean the wound but if there is a scab leave it (so long as you think its clean underneath, which it sounds like you sorted this morning) or it will start bleeding again (of course that is unless you vet advises you otherwise) a scab is the body's natural bandaid.

Just curious how things were once you had another look at her.

I put some cream on her cut. Its a pretty big scab but i dont think it will re-open. And it's pretty swollen. But other then that she's eating and drinking just fine and rolling in the mud after her coat was a beautiful white again.
I put tape over were she cut herself on the wood. Hoping it might help? Im looking into rubber or even bubble wrap to put around the sides of the stall/barn.
