Hey all!
I'm new to this site, and relatively new to riding. I used to ride when i was 10 or 11, and stopped due to how expensive it was. Now that i'm 'all grown up' I've decided to pick it up again. So last week was my first lesson in 11 years! I'm REALLY rusty.
So, since i'm starting back up, and this time I'M paying for it and not mommy, i want to get the MOST out of my lessons. So outside of lesson time, i'd like to read up on it.
does anyone have recommendations on books, magazines, or other literature that is good? i've printed up the entire Kinder Way series, and am reading that now.
I went to barnes and noble and their horse section was only one shelf of horse care books. I don't own a horse (yet!) and don't want to know how to take care of them, i just want to make sure i'm riding right. I also want to learn about horsecare, but that's for a later date.
any suggestions (that i might possibly find online?)

Get hold of Heather's book - it's brilliant (and this is a completely independent reference!) the video is worth watching too but I'm not sure if there's a US version. You have several horse riding magazines over there which are good. Ask on the Forum and I'm sure US-based riders will advise.

Hope you enjoy the riding. Take your time, it will feel rusty to start with but you'll soon feel absolutely terrific. I did and I'd been saddle-free for 30 years until March 2001. Good luck.

Welcome to the site!

Since you're new, you might not know who Heather is. She is a member on the board, and he full name is Heather Moffett, and her book is Enlightened Equitation. There's a forum on here created for her, so if you have any questions specifically for her, ask there! She is a classical riding instructor in the UK, and she has developed a method of working with your horse, so he really responds, and works with you, not against you- as one! EE (Enlightened Equitation) is what it is called. She gives seminars and demos in the UK, and is renound. I haven't recieved my copy yet, but her book is very good, and her methods do work! Ask around here, and you will get great reviews! Read the ones on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk! She also has a video- I haven't seen it, but it probably covers what it said in the book. www.feedmark.com sells the only US VHS kind. I recommend that book, and if you have any questions on riding, everyone on here will be glad to help! Good luck!

Maci :)

PS- About magazines in the US- Practical Horseman created a new section devoted to the new English, beginner adult rider, which is quite good! Horse Illustrated is also a good magazine, as well as Equus, more for horse health & care.

Definately get Enlightened Equitation. Another book I'm picking my way through is Alois Podhajsky's The Complete Training of the Horse and Rider. It is difficult and advanced, no doubt, but I have found it is very intersting and informative. He tells you how and why you are doing things. But don't expect to breeze right through it! Good luck and welcome to the board!!!:)

I would recomend Horse Illustrated. I'm not sure what style of riding you do, but this is based mainly for English Riders, although once in a while they'll have a section for us Western Riders. :)

Also, theres a book called THE HORSE ENCYCLOPEDIA which is also very good. If theres something that you really don't understand look it up, and most likely they'll have it. :)

Get some horse psychology books. There are lots out there but get one or two and pick what you think will work for you and the horses you encounter.

Some are a bit over the top, but read a lot and pick the best of lots of methods. If you can get into the horses mind you will be better off on his back.

At Amazon US, it is out of print/stock! I have the same problem- I live in Canada, and everywhere I call or go to, they say it's out of stock or publication. Go to Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk), and there they have it in stock. Here's what I figured out:

The book is 16.14 (UK) and the shipping to Canada/US is total 4.95 (UK). That adds up to 21.09 (UK). I converted that to Canadian dollars, and it comes out to $47.05 (Can). If you convert that to American dollars (www.xe.com/ucc -Website for currency conversion), it will be less than the Canadian dollar total (maybe $25-30 US??). Give it a try! It's the only place that I can find where it's in stock!

Hi Maci,

My copy of EE arrived today, from Amazon.co.uk (via the 'books' menu at the top of this page!).Ordered Tuesday night so very quick order.

If you can't order it directly from Amazon but want to buy it then pm me and I'll see what the postage costs would be to buy one here & ship it over to you. No profit to me; just an offer of help.:)

I've seen it at Stateline Tack. I got mine through Barnes & Noble online, but I don't know if they stock it anymore.

Paul C- That's very kind of you! :) But it works out just great! I've got it ordered now from a book company here in Canada, and it is $40 something, but I'm going to cancel it because they can't locate a copy, and order from Amazon (UK), which works out great, because with shipping cost and everything, the book is the same price, as it would be with other Canadain book companies! Sorry if I don't make sense! Thanks for your guesture, but no thanks! I've got it all worked out! ;)

Barkless- Stateline Tack has it on their website, but I wrote to them a bit ago, and they replied saying they don't carry it anymore! :( Why leave it on your website, if you don't have it!!? Crazyness!
