I kind of stumbled onto a neat trick for horses that hate the bit by the way.. I carry those little mint breath sprays and found that he LOVED when I spritzed a little on the bit after warming it up for him. hahahha
I noticed someone left some mint mouthwash in the product shelf of washrack area, maybe for this reason? I had to leave an IOU note: boogie nabbed it,bit right through the plastic top off and whipped the full bottle at me, mouthwash flying everywhere. I had mouthwash in my hair and was laughing like a fool. (after i chewed him out and walked away though)
All I heard was crunch! and sudden cold mint flying at me. LOL

That's an awesome idea Jroz..
At my old barn we used to clean the bridles with a bar of saddle soap.. or glycerine looking stuff. (transparent yellow) I seen one of the girls clean the bit and told her not to, that's going in his mouth and will be nasty! Of course she had to get all snotty rather than saying.. oh good point.
Toothpaste is an awesome idea though, it would shine the bit and get them to like the bit too. I'm going do that too.

I thought of putting toothpaste on the bit so my horse would get to like it being put in, but then thought all that fluoride might not be good for him.

Surely if you did it with a pea-sized blob - they're at least 9 times bigger than us, so the amount must be insignificant to them? May even strengthen their teeth - to bite us! Hmmmm...

i might occasionally be guilty of doing the bit with saddle soap. :o i dont think it tastes that strongly - especially if i'm not using it for a few days
but then, this is for a horse who would eat anything :D :D :D
i dont think toothpaste will harm a horse

I don't think fluoride would be too harmful, I wouldn't worry. I live in NE England, and fluoride is added to the water here (all water, anything that comes out of the tap). Around 10% of Britain has fluorine added to the water supply. That therefore means that the water my ponies drink out of their water trough contains fluorine, so it doesn't seem to have any drastic effects! :)
