How do you longe a horse that simply doesnt want to be longed? I want to revise my miniature horses schooling but hes unresponsive and i can sometimes loose my temper. I have found more success inlongeing using natural horsemanship so should I just keep going with that and hope he inproves or how do i make it a fun and learning experience for him and and make him more responsive?

Does he know HOW to lunge? It's not usually as simple as they don't want to be lunged!

If he doesn't know how to lunge then rope in someone else to help you, one stands in the circle holding the lunge line, the other leads him around in the circle. Once he gets the idea the helped backs off a bit and eventually comes to stand with you in the centre. At this point the helper can hold the whip while you keep the lunge line. Eventually you can go solo. It's a bit of a quick way of telling but that's the way you can go about it.

Long reining is good exercise anyway and you could try lunging from two lines, I did it with Saff the other day and she stepped into canter MUCH better than she does on the single lunge line!

thank you for the info but yes, he knows how to longe. I schooled him to drive too so we have done lots of long reining. He just doesnt repspond to commands well so he sees no pint in listning. He has quite bad manners but is a lovely boy!

You must communicate, fair and clear, consistant requests.
This is a lack of respect for you and he feel, you can't make me and when you give up he win's.
Find someone like a riding instructor to watch and give you tips on your communication of your body language, your positioning, vebal requests etc...
You just need to establish control, respect, trust as his leader without human negative behavior and learn to use the horse's basic natural instrinct.

Don't use treats, because this only undermines your leadership.
Think about the Alpha horse...this horse isn't giving out treats to follow and do.The herd has learned The pecking order and who is the leader.
Those equine signs, communication are understoods, what everything means and it is peace, rest, security, protection that, whats important to the herd.
The Alpha only needs to move the herd to feed, and get water and correct those that are causing a problems for the herd.
I hope this helps.

Have you tried free schooling him you have no lunge line to rely on and your body language becomes more important, voice control is good to don't baby talk him he's clearly not silly, project voice loud & clear for foward movement, lower & softer for downward transitions, this also goe's for body languge forward & bold/large for more action more submisive for slowing down. Good idea is to pratice large & small moves in the mirror.
