View Full Version : Song suggestions?... (not O/T honest!)

Ok, hoping you guys will be able to help me with something! I'm trying to think of a song which I can sing to myself (or maybe out loud of no one's around!) while I'm jumping and which will help me work on getting a good, even, forward going canter for jumping. I'm hoping this will help with two things: a) keeping a good rhythm and b) I figure if I sing out loud it will give me something else to focus on (breathing) and will help me to relax when I jump as I tend to tense up.

So - any suggestions for songs to help with canter rhythm? I remember doing a similar exercise when I was little and for some reason the song we all picked was Humpty Dumpty. Somehow that now feels like tempting fate...!

Hi drookitsheep,
I looked into this too! You need songs that have a 3/4 waltz rhythm to go with the 3 time rhythm of canter. They tend to be a bit corny, if anyone can find better, please let me know!
Here are a few I found;
Amazing grace )
Mull of Kintyre ) scottish theme!
Moon River
Oh what a beautiful morning
Take it to the limit
Three times a lady
Are you lonesome tonight

People who are into ballroom dancing or dressage to music may have some suggestions too.
Good Luck.

Thanks for your suggestions guys - I think this has to be my favourite so far as it's the total opposite of "humpty dumpty"... :o

cathytodd, I hear what you're saying about the 3/4 rhythm - only problem is that those types of things are a bit slow to encourage me to think forward going canter into a jump - I'm inclined to think I'm travelling forward more than I actually am - I do like the thought of going with "oh what a beautiful morning" though as it's so relaxing!

The best I've come up with so far is an old favourite from Mary Poppins... "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" (even though when typing it my spelling is atrocious...) although it sounds a bit daft when you try and sing it in a canter rhythm.

cvb - I'm now dreading seeing you at at any Riding Club jumping thing for fear of being heard singing...

Fantastic rhythm shame about the ending :D :DYep that would work as its a waltz rythmn.

Shame about the words though, not the most positive vibe to be picking up on when your jumping!!:D

Drookit sheep -even worse would be to hear cvb singing (I now honest (lol) joking cvb - how's that bike)

To get back on topic - I sing Queen songs badly - then they fit into any rhythm - 'We are the champions' is better than 'another bits the dust'!!

or how about - We will survive!

or if it goes wrong - I did it my way (as you lay on the ground!!!!!)

no she's not joking - my singing is appalling ! Best done inside my head and not vocalised :o

but then the SJ got cancelled, so you'll have some time to practice your x-factor !

drookitsheep - are you coming to the AT workshop ? not that I am trying to round up people at all :D

HH - bike is in the shed, until its lighter in the evenings as I don't have any working lights at the moment. I did mend my "blinking" sam brown belt so have reasonable visibility in the day time - bit of a blast from the past getting a soldering iron out !

That's a great one! I will try that one next time at home (when no one else is around...) :D Thanks for that!

cvb - I'd love to go to the AT workshop but it's the same night as the final comp of the Gleneagles dressage league - until the Feb one I'd been doing quite well in the league so I'm keen to go to this last one and see if I can try and redeem myself. Really disappointed that they clash as I'd like to find out more about AT and try it out first hand instead of trying to understand it from books! Will just have to get myself sorted out for a session. Are you going?

Thanks for all the song suggestions guys - going to have fun with these!

LOL - I'm organising it :D Didn't realise there was a clash tho' - it had to be a Thurs or Fri evening to get the trainer, and it was a question of when Gleneagles had the room free.

Thanks Hannah - couldn't think how the tune went but looked it up on the net and that's another one I can add to my repertoire for my next jumping session! Will have a go at the weekend and see how I get on. Hopefully singing (quietly!) while jumping will remind me to breathe and relax and keep thinking "forwards"... so much to remember!

raingodz - I think ponylover88 must know my horse. He's the kind who will walk past quad bikes, tractors etc but will spook at his own shadow, ferocious crispbags and the same gatepost every single time we've passed it in the two years I've had him...

cvb - hopefully there's been lots of interest in the AT session and we can have another one soon?!

but Jill jumped clear as one oughta.

I sing Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo, from bedknobs and broomsticks (I think)
Or Lord of the dance. Both help me do lots of things!

Think bouncy, energetic songs for a lively, forward going canter :D

Another one I thought of is the Monty Python's Flying Circus theme tune, but I'm afraid I'm putting the singing on hold for a bit....

I got caught out on Sunday when I was out for a hack. Came cantering along on one of the circular hacking routes in quite a good mood singing Nellie the Elephant just a bit too enthusiastically and, as I was making a mental note to learn the rest of the words (and not just the two lines it transpires I actually know), Murphy started acting up and going sideways... looked behind to see what was making him prat about and coming down one of the paths leading onto path I was on was qutie a large hack from the riding school. I felt such a plonker :( Typical - first time I give it a bash, I get caught.

And that's why I want my own place to keep my horse!!

I use " She'll be coming round the mountain" :) but generally make my own verses up after a while eg
"She'll be riding a stroppy coblet when she comes" or
"My God that jump is massive- dont look down", etc....
