Since I'm stuck at home at the moment, I've been doing "projects" to fill my time. Now I'd like to make some useful things for my horse/stable/tackroom. I don't have a decent sewing machine (just a mini JML one), so sewing anything other than reasonably thin fabric is a no-go. Does anyone have any ideas for things I could make? Will consider pretty much anything...

You could put lavender bags in your boots when you aren't wearing them - not that I'm suggesting you have smelly feet or anything!

Also useful for storing with your tack to cover up a musty smell or for hanging in the car. (Well mine always reeks of horse even when I've cleaned it out!:o )

Lavender is very calming - to horses too - so if you have a flighty horse or one which is feeling the onset of spring, you could carry L bags in your pockets. I once had a riding lesson immediately after an aromatherapy massage with lavender oil and the poor animal could barely put one foot in front of the other she was so sleepy. Since she was normally a bit of a handful we could only put it down to the lavender!

I have read recently that you should be careful with lavender essential oils if you are pregnant.

A cotton draw-string bag to store your show bridle in?
A cotton saddle cover.
A lightweight summer sheet to keep flies and/or dust off at shows

All of the above could be made from redundant cotton bedsheets - or linen ones if you can persuade elderly members of the family to part with them.

Knit a sweater with a horsey theme design. Google for a knitting pattern. OK, you don't have to actually wear it. You could give it to a horse-mad child of your acquaintance or even sell it on Ebay - there are idiots on there that will buy anything!

Do you crochet? Try Googling to see if you could find a pattern for one of those crocheted fly fringe thingies. (No, I don't know if such a pattern exists but you could while away an hour or so searching!)

Wooden name plates for the horses. You could write the names in "poker-work" (a poker or suitable piece of metal was heated in the fire and used to burn the words onto a slice of wood from a tree branch or on a small piece of plank. A very popular victorian craft but you could equally well use paint and stencils if you wanted something a little less incendiary. You could give them to fellow horse owners for christmas or you might even be able to sell them.

Embroider your horse's name on a bought numnah or saddle cloth.

Could you get out to somewhere like "Hobbycraft", the craft super market. You could get a few good ideas from somewhere like that?

What about a cross-stitch? Small and fiddly but they do look effective... you could even design your own incorporating Sal and his name or something???

Oooh I am very interested in this sort of stuff! I am a textiley sort of person and have a new sewing machine and need some new things to make!! I have made the ordinary stuff like a saddle cover, grooming tray cover, bucket covers but am going to try some more advanced things hopefully! :)

Oh and how would you embroider a horses name onto a saddle cloth? I would love to be able to do this but have never looked at embroidery!!

:D In my opinion cross stich would be lovely!

1st step) Get your horse facing you

2nd step) Take photo

3rd step) Upload photo or have developed

4th step) View it.....keep it by you....and start cross stitching!

Plus......you could hang it up in your room/house or maybe your tack room or stable door......or something like that.

Its a good project right, you even get your horse to have a photoshoot!

there are sites where you can convert a photo into cross stitch, but if it's got alot of colours in it, you will spend a fortune in threads!

Hope you're ok Sez as your stuck home I can only assume your poorly.

this probably doesn't help with your sewing machine but for people intrested in making blankets for their horses there is this site that acctually sells patterns for breeches, blankets all sizes, chaps, and different types of jackets the store is called seatle fabrics here is an easier way to get to the equine stuff the pattern manufacturers are suitability so that might help for you guys that don't live in north america but lets see if it works.

the stitching thing sounds good too for you because of your machine. there are some light weight fabrics though and you could make slinkies or sleezies for your horse and you don't need a very strong machine.

There are lots of sites that tell you how to make up rope halters aswell, from simple ones to sidepulls etc
You need to measure up your horse and buy nylon sailing rope though.
I was bored during my LC (in my room "studying") I made one out of wool :o you can't use it of course but at least I know if I'm ever stuck I can make a halter out of a single piece of rope - cowboy style :D
