I am currently in the process of backing my first horse. He is a 14hh arab/welsh/cob and is coloured. He is 3 and I have only recently started working him. I have been working him in the round pen teaching him to go forwards in walk trot canter and to halt and stand as asked.I have also got him to move over and to go back when asked and just a few days back started working him in long reins. Yesterday I was working him in the round pen loose when one of the horses who had been on box rest was turned out in the school next door and decided that the grass in our field was better and therefore decided to leap the fence and then come bucking and squealing around the edge of the round pen. What I wanted to share is that I was amazed that my youngster decided that he would continue to listen to me and continue working and ignoring the bucking squealing horse just feet away from him that he didn't know that well. I just couldn't believe it. My YO's wife who does most of the backing at the yard was gobsmacked and said to me that I had obviously done a fantastic job with him for him to want to stay with me....sorry I don't mean to sound like I'm gloating but I was just so pleased to hear that and wanted to share with you all. I will hopefully get some pics of him working this week to share with you.
