Can anyone help?!! I've just bought a 10 month old colt. I have him on his own and he keeps jumping the fence!!! I've had to put him in the stable, but i'm not happy about him being in all the time. The fence is about 3 foot, hes jumped the normal p&r and electric. I'm really scared he's going to get on the road!!

Any advise anyone?:)

Of course hs'e going to jump out if he's on his own! Get him a friend.

Youngsters should be kept with similar aged company, and if you don't have the facilities to do that you may need to re-consider. Or send him away to live at a stud farm of similar. Once he's gelded you can keep him in a mixed herd, where he'll still have younger horses to play with, but older mares to teach him manners.

A Friend? I was thinking that. Would u think a filly or colt of the same sort of age would be ok?

I'm thinking of getting a Shetland.;)

he reaally needs a friend, expecailly for a baby that must be quite depressing for him.

the only way to keep him from jumping would be to make the fence higher, or get him a buddy.

A colt would be best, and with a filly you'll have problems with accidental foals later.

You will still need to have him in with some older mares once he's older (gelded) too - that how they learn manners. Having two young colts running about unchecked is asking for naughtyness and manner problems ;)

A shetland colt will be too small for him really. You want something nearer his own size. An older sheltand youngster (i.e 2yrs) might do OK though if your colt is only small.

for a baby that must be quite depressing for him.

'Quite depressing' ;) I was thinking nearer unbearable :(

 Hmmmm what about a sheep or goat?

He's only just over 12hh at the mo, i'm planning on getting him gelded pretty soon.

do i assume you're trying to avoid another horse for cost reasons? what about leasing out the other space in the field, assuming there's room?!

:( I'd rather not get another horse mainly due to space but we're not allowed to sublet the field (its rented with our house). Also i'd have to split my time between them!!

IMO at 10 months old he needs equine company to learn "how to be a horse" . Horses are herd animals and they need to be kept with other of their own kind . I would guess that your fella is very unhappy at the moment and that is why is he jumping out all the time !!

I don't want to sound harsh but did you think about how you planned on keeping him before you got him ? at 10 months he has alot of growing up to do and years of play and learning to experiance that you as a human can not give him .

Get him a companion , another pony . I have two horses and it only cost half as much for the other one on top of the 1st . If you can't afford this you could do free grazing for another horse as i doubt this would affect your rent agreement . Yes sheep or goats can be horses companions but you pony is a baby and needs to be with other horses .

hope you get it sorted !!

well i've always had horses from around 8 months old and i've never had this problem before! He's ok if i stay with him but it seems to be if he can't see me!
I think i'll have to invest in a buddy for him, the last thing i want is for him to be a unhappy chappy!! It'll be my worry that if they both jump out i'll have to get hold of them both!!
i'll certainly be spending the weekend putting up higher fencing!!
Thanks everyone!!:)

Where abouts in Nottingham so you live? I could help you find a yard where he'll have company. Is he at home? If so, I might be able to find him a companion.

Just a question, but why is the fence only 3 ft?! I wouldn't even put minis in there, let alone horses! Around here, the minimal fence height for horses has to legally be 4'3 in height. (not that that helped. my weanling jumped that 6 times before he decided he had had enough)

And get him a friend! If you can't get him another horse, at least get him a mini donk or a goat or something. No horse, especially a youngster, does well alone

the electric fence is 3 foot, the wooden is bigger but he still got over it!!:)
