Firstly is that I real thing? Becuase I think thats what is called. Second I know the easily way of getting a horse to work on the vertical is by lundging so if say I lundged my horse every week how long would it take for him to do it under saddle the whole time? I'm new to all this outline etc stuff so if I sound dumb tell me! By the way he is already able to hold it in walk and a bit in trot not really a collected working trot though! Also he can't do a proper full circle of canter on the lunge on the right any ideas? He is my first horse and my RI is teaching me to improve him all the time and get him into self carriage as he has good conformation and is a pure connemara! I don't want to just have him as a hack because I know he is capable of so much more (no offence to hacking...I love hacking)!

Do a search on 'outline', 'on the bit' etc. There are loads of threads about this on here.
It's not about 'holding' the front end, it's about working from the back end forwards. Unless you get the back end working properly then you'll never truly have him in a correct outline.

So working on the vertical is the the same as an outline? I am actually really confused! I know I sound really inexperienced and I am with all this self carriage, outline stuff!

Yes, it's called lots of things :)
You don't know if you don't ask so don't worry about asking questions. Some schools don't teach you about riding in an outline, you'd be surprised how many people think that it's only for people doing dressage!

Well I have never done a dreassage competition in my life! I am currently a new horse owner trying to have the courage to pc shows! LOL but my RI is mad on dressage and SJ so we have to do it properaly! It ca be a real pain! My boy is only six and is a connemara so I want to get a good start on bringing him on further! I haven't done lateral movements with him really only circles which he's ok at not mastered them yet but either have I! lol! Should I teach him lateral movements before working on an outline? Or what? Its gone so much more complex since I got a horse I used to just you know kick to go now its all about seat, half halts, weight etc!

I found this link for another post on gadgets, but it has some useful info on horses poll and neck

basically you may be after a vertical nose - but the "how" you get it affects the quality etc

Well I lunged him yesterday and I toke lunging lessons aswell so I know I'm lunging right and we used side reins, hes was actually having fun in the end! He able to hold about 1 circle of canter then one circle of trot then one circle of trot again for three times so I don't know how good that is etc. but his right rein is less supple than his left so I am trying to even it out! By the way he accepts the side reins aswell before you ask!
