Everything physically possibly (and a few rather odd impossible things) crossed for you sweetheart :p

You deserve this, you're a lovely person with the animal's best interests at heart, we all know that and you'll be a lovely new mummy for your new horse when you find him or her :D

Flump - if your horse shopping was good then we want to know, but if it was disappointing, then we will sympathise ( or in my case totally empathise!). My trainer says that I must kiss a lots of frogs(yeauch) before finding my prince(ess).

If this one wasnt to be, look forward to the next one. If it was, photos please!

I'm not doing it on purpose!:p
I was trying to make up my mind before I posted. Stll thinking really but anyway, here is the news:
He is a total sweetheart, very lovable. Small and hairy, black with white star and snip and little pony ears. He is very biddable and well mannered to handle. There was one small napping incident on the riding bit - but was in a totally understandable situation and doesn't worry me at all. Having ridden loads af similar riding school ponies I specialise in napping and he was easy to sort. He is pretty bombproof I would say.
I am concerned that he is a bit smaller than I expected - we think more 14.1 rather than 14.3, and I thought he was too thin as well. Not dreadfullly so but at present he lives out with no rug or shelter and his only feed is hay. Doesn't get anything extra when he is worked either.
Saying this I know he is a native and I am a mollycoddler but still.
People were extremely genuine.
He carried the weight ok, but to be honest I would feel happier if I was a stone lighter for my own peace of mind. Friend says I am being silly and he is fine.
I really like this lad and feel he could well be "the one". Don't want to loose him, but want to feel comfortable on him too. I am wondering if I could get him and ride for very limited periods only at walk whilst I diet? When motivated I am a fast loser so this could be done. Hmmm... just don't know.
I also feel sorry for him because the pony he is with bullies him and he had a huge bite mark on his bum to prove it. He only gets caught up and has any attention at weekends at the moment otherwise just in the field all the time with bully pony. He seemed fed up with life and I think we could make him happy.
Can't post pics yet I am afraid as present people are in them all.

He sounds good for you Flump! - glad it went well. Could you have him for a couple of weeks with a view to buy, so you could get to know him better? I can't imagine having to make such an important decision on a couple of hours worth of viewing. What about vetting too?

domane
19th Feb 2006, 09:06 AM
A-ha.... I DID wonder whether there was some indecision when I spotted you on-line and then off again..... you have got a big decision to make Flump... not offering any advice as you are clearly weighing (oops, pardon the pun :p ) up the pros and cons... but you DO seem to be rather smitten from the tone of your post (as long as it's a genuine "click" and not the sympathy vote as he does seem a tad neglected at the mo)

I just think it's a sign that you have a link through weight - you want to lose some and he needs to put some on!!!! :D

How long are you giving yourself to decide one way or the other?

Good luck, whatever you choose..... XXXxxxXXX

Well...have just rang the people...and agreed to have him on a months trial!!!

Jester is worth it though.:D

Small and hairy, black with white star and snip and little pony ears.

Aw, bless, I'll have him!

I am wondering if I could get him and ride for very limited periods only at walk whilst I diet?

When I first came across the pony I'm now hoping to part loan, and I wasn't sure I was ready to take a pony on, I came up with lots of ideas like this: "I'll start by going up and grooming her and taking her for walks"; "I'll start with groundwork"; "In the beginning I'll just ride her in the school"; until in the end, I'd given myself so many "gentle introduction" scenarios, I was able to make the decision to give it a go (currently working with the scenario "let's try it one week at a time and see how it turns out"). Hope it turns out the same for you -- what an exciting decision to have to make!

Edited to say, you've now posted and decided! CONGRATULATIONS! Pony definitely more fun than sherbet lemons.

Hi Flump 67
Glad you are going to have the Fell on trial. Hope this goes ok. What's his name? They are really nice ponies but sharp (and very knowing!). They are strong and can carry a bit of weight - (tho you wont get a Fell that's 14.3hh unless it's crossed with something). I think Falcon's about 14.1hh. At the moment, here the weather's so disgusting today that I definitely wont be riding him but just paying him a 'social' visit.
Anyway good luck.:p

Have got to sort insurance and transport so will be 2 weeks time I think as insurance has 2 week exclusion even though cover is started on day you take it out.
Lots of things to do in the meanwhile - am thinking about stable matting, borrowing a decent saddle that will fit better, trying to avoid chocolate:( and also avoiding any more horsy-item shopping on strict advice from friend as in her words I am a "wasteful spendthrift who must learn to say no".
Can't wait for him to walk out of the lorry and into our little yard.:)

Oh congratulations Flump!!! Fantastic news, I'm made up for you and totally forgive you for not posting whilst I was online yesterday :p

As for his size, what's 2" between friends? If he carried you yesterday then he'll carry you happily in future - well done you, you really deserve this!

Did you take pics?

Just realised janhebb, you didn't exactly say how your viewing went but I am thinking was not "the one" from your offer to empathise?
Imp - Jester is around the same height as Megan I think - do you mind if I ask how tall you are? Also, how did you lesson go - first time for you riding her at home I believe?
Also - had another thought - seems like I might now have a pony that I can take to help out with our local RDA which is something I have always wanted to do. I am going to ring the organiser and sound things out once he is settled.:)

Hi Flump, thanks for asking - I didnt want to hi-jack your thread! I definitely like Billy - he's a 14.3 chunky cob gelding who's well schooled (former riding school and RDA) BUT having just about recovered a little confidence after a very beautiful but unwise purchase a couple of years ago (broken pelvis - say no more!) I am taking things very slowly. My trainer is coming to see him next week, and then we'll see.....

Patience is a virtue...they tell me!:o

Interesting comment about insurance - I hadn't thought about that.

Good luck

Hi Flump - good luck, great to hear you have a Fell lined up. My Mum has one and he happily carries me - 5'7" and size 16. My highland also carries me - and jumps - he is about 14.1hh. He can even gallop with me on - not bad for a wee one!!!

In fact, it is probably the pony's weight that will be the problem!!! - keeping weight off these natives is hard work - and they can go down with laminitis if too fat.

Enjoy the trial - looking forward to the piccies.

Struggling with pics as previously said other people are in them all so not appropriate to post, but clever OH has managed to take still from a video clip where Jester is peopleless. Bear in mind he is soaking wet in this one (peed it down all day throughout the trial) but at least it gives you a vague idea :)

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww, he's lovely :D Bless him, soaking wet :p

To answer your question: I'm a small frame and am 5'3" (on my tippy toes) and Megan is 14h 1" (on tippy hooves) :D

RDA is a wonderful thing to contemplate, I wish Megan was more patient with beginners and riders who have difficulty with balance because I'd love to be able to use her to help  I got some strange looks today as I had to admit to some fellow livery owners to being disabled myself (I'm hard of hearing and it isn't always apparent to those who don't know, perhaps they just think I'm thick or ignorant  ) and said I couldn't go hacking unless I had my Hi Viz stuff which disappointingly hadn't arrived and I couldn't get it from the tack shop. The insurance company would walk all over me if I had an accident and me and horsey were'nt lit up like the Blackpool illuminations  It's tipping down with rain now and we can't go in the sand school for our lesson as Meg hates it anyway and hates the rain. My daughter took her for an in hand play in the school this morning and I got the begging bit in walk on vid... I'll try to post it so you can see Meg in her full glory :D

He really does look lovely though and I think you've done the right thing with a trial. I must say you sound very positive and confident - that's the major part of the battle won ;)

Thanks Imp, you lucky teeny-tiny thing you! Bet Megan has to look round and check to see if you are actually "on" or not:p Looking forward to seeing Megan in motion!

Went out for the day on Sat. and in a village we visited, someone was having a book sale. Picked up a gem: "Every Child's Book of Riding" by Dorian Williams (my era!!).
ANY way, extract on native ponies re. Fells: ... "these ponies are good to ride and hunt... they too have the background of heavy packwork, two hundred and forty miles a week with about sixteen stone. Fell ponies have a wonderful walk; long-striding and rhythmic, sure-footed... Fine shoulders and comparatively long in the back... in height about thirteen hands two inches to fourteen hands and are good safe rides..."

Fantastic! I want one of those, too!
Do hope Jester is the one- sounds as though he's a love. Bet he'll be glad to get away from that bullying pony and have some TLC:) :) :)
