Well, I went back to see a cob again today with expert help, and he seems as if he is really really nice! Quiet ( just like Megan in Imps post today!) and well behaved. He was a bit jolly on a hack, but it is very cold and windy, and it was nothing more than a few speedy steps.

I am being totally sensible and will sleep on it over night and I know there is still the horrible money bit and the vetting......... but maybe, just maybe I will have to find out how to post piccys on the forum soon!!

Excited!!

You can alwasy go and try him again. If he was good on a windy day he isnt going to give you much grief on a calm day. We tried my daughters pony in gale force winds and she was a little angel.

Ohhhhh, sounds veeerrrry interesting :p

Tell us more, colour, size, what's he doing now? Being jolly on a hack sounds ok to me, mine's mardy in trot at the moment  Love her :D

Do you have any pics or links to an ad we can all ponder with our horseloving eyes?

Look forward to hearing what your 'sleeping on it' night brings :)

But have made a subject to vet offer...and am waiting to hear if it is accepted. This horse buying malarkey is worse than house buying! Do you think there;s a TV prog in it ...like Location Location Location?!

No piccys as I was so concentrating on watching the 'oss that I forgot!! He is a black cob gelding 14h3 with a lovely outlook on life I think. Has two speeds - slow and perky but safe. Has 4 sort of grey bands above the coronet (please dont tell me about that old wives tale about horses with 4 white socks - I;m not going to listen!!)

Updates tomorrow I hope!

Ohhhhh, how EXCITING!!! I love black horses, and have a vested interested in cobs at present :D

Now, you will remember pics next time won't you, promise?

Slow and Perky seem nice transitions to me :D :p I get slow and oh alright then, b*gger you, I'll trot... v e r y slowly

I second your call for a tv series on buying a new horse! Let's extend that to buying, selling, stable management and riding your horse from beginner to advanced - for adults, not aimed at the pretty, pinky pony girls (sorry, no offence intended, narrowly avoided getting pink stuff myself at 43 :o ) ... there are prog's about everything blimmin else aren't there? Perhaps a celebrity riding school LOL LOL LOL ... (now watch this space  )

Hey there's a thought...how about locking us up on a well equipped yard with our dream horses and a tame trainer for a few weeks ...all expenses paid of course......

It would be a drag but we'd cope!!!!!

OK....i've just heard that revised offer accepted and vetting to be arranged..... I MUST KEEP CALM AND BREATHING......

I must also stop looking at stuff I need to buy ....I am already working out colour schemes (but NOT pink!). There is many a slip, etc etc etc.

I will remember the camera next time.

*squeals* How exciting! When is the vetting due to take place? Just so we can keep everything crossed for you:D

Oh, and don't panic if he doesn't pass with flying colours... ask the vet what his/her considered opinion is about you buying him anyway, then come here and get some advice BEFORE making a decison.. unless of course the vet says he has a wooden leg or whatever;)

I nearly let DollyDaydream go 'cause of her failed vetting... but hey! What's a heart defect between friends?!;)

Everything crossed for your imminent admission to the exclusive New Rider New Owners Club 2006:D

Well, the vetting is on Monday and i have booked the morning off work (I am NOT popular!) but it is a long wait.....

I am also in the OMG *** AM I DOING stage... do you know the one? What if he turns out a complete fruit loop when he gets to his new home??? What if I cant ride???? What if what if what if.......aaargh!

Note to self - breathing is not an optional exercise. Good grief - I am supposed to be a rational old trout and I feel 15 (am actually 51!) but have waited for this for 40 years. My first venture into horse ownership was not a success and I so want to do it right this time for both me and the 'oss.

Thanks for your interest - it is somehow comforting!

Enjoy the positive emotions and try and enjoy the doubts.

I've been 'poisoned' by RI telling me that the horse might change when you take him home.

He could be quiet now at 5 but a monster at 7.

I've read posts on this forum that agree with that but I've read loads and loads that don't.

It surely is and adventure looking, vetting and buying your horse but I am only too aware that the adventure and emotional rollercoaster is only just beginning.

As long as we are still feeling it means we are alive and well.:D

I am soooo excited for you - can't believe I'll have to wait a whole week to find out how vetting goes as I am away next week:(

All physically possible crossed for you.:)

Awwww, Monday's AGES away :D !!! How exciting, I don't see much sleep happening in your house this weekend ;)

I got my new girl in January after waiting 38 years or so for my own pony (the 5 years before that I wanted to actually be a horse :o Had a cracking canter down to a tee ;) ) Other folk have commented that Megan has 'warmed' and has dropped the shields so new ownership for her in the last few weeks has revealed a personality - she was formerly used in a RS for a year and really enjoys the one-to-one :D . She's a b*gger to ride though but I knew she had some grumpyness about being ridden, I'm hoping she'll calm a bit as time goes by on that side too as she's such a perfectly mannered darling on the ground :D

I'm glad your previous experience hasn't put you off; I'm sure you'll be fine and I'm looking forward to hearing about the vetting and when he's going to be delivered :p

Good luck for Monday!

Just for the record the 'OMG what am I doing's' and 'OMG what if he turns into a devil horse when I get him home' are all totally NORMAL... ask anyone who has ever bought a horse, especially a 'first' horse or 'first horse after bad experience', and they will eventually confess to having exactly the same feelings!

I've 'owned' Dolly for two weeks tomorrow, and had her on trial for a couple of weeks before that, and I'm still having the odd 'OMG...' thought! Most of the time now though, I just feel very happy and contented:D

Keep us posted!

I've just started leasing and am kind of like what am I doing? I've never ridden a horse in just a paddock, I've never had a horse that wasn't stabled. It's pretty different, but I'm learning to love the freedom of it. This horse sounds wonderful and everything should work out great. Sometimes you just click with a horse and you know their the one.

To answer my own question - no I wont, not yet. Vetting was v thorough and found 2 small cataracts in the left eye. Didnt seem to bother the horse but did bother me as they are progressive and could make a huge difference in the future.

Heartbreaking decision because in all other respects he suited me fine, but I have decided to pass him by.

Am v grumpy and sad now, but thanks for all your crossed fingers. I do hope he finds a good home.

Really sorry to hear that :( I'm sure he'll find a good home and there's another horse with your name on it out there somewhere :)

Oh what a shame :( ! I too hope he finds a nice home.

You've made a brave and sensible decision. You paid for a vetting to alert you to any causes 'not' to purchase this horse and you've let your head lead you and stand by that, well done! :D

Do keep us posted on your search for your special equine friend, we love this stage of horse ownership :D :D

Thats really sad for both of you.

Pinnochios vetting went badly the first time as the vet refused to pass him as he had thrush in his feet. she offered to return the next week and re test him.

That week really dragged. But retest came, and he passed with flying colours.

The vet said she thought he fitted my purpose well.

It took me three months to find him. But worth it.

Oh and on the subject of them changing once bought. I really worried abouut that. Pinnochio hasnt moved home, just owner. He still lives at the same plce. This is a good way to deal with the transition, and firtst hand help of some one who knows him is there.

If you find and buy locally, its always worth asking if they can stay, even for a short time, whilst you both jel.

Our yard does it all the time. Most of the liveries bought from the yard.

Libbyo :)
