I know that is one route.. there is a section on here about exams and careers I'm sure you'll find some great info there. ;)

BHS have a site of their own also, :)

and with the BHS you also need to do a certain number of hours of teaching before you are officially qualified. The initial teaching exam is PTT (Preliminary Teaching Test).

You can also do it through NVQ'S if you work at a Riding Stables.

you definately have a Certification programme. I can't remember the exact name so will have to go take a look. Bear in mind BHS is, in this situation, just acting as an awarding body and is not the only one (ABRS also award).

just spot the wishful thinking ... I have this wish to be a qualified western instructor ( as well as under BHS, which I am already) - and of course fancy doing it the US rather than UK :D .... in my dreams !

the BHS way of doing it is:

stage 1 - riding and Horse care
riding and road safety test - HAS to be done before riding part of stage 2
stage 2 - riding and horse care

then you can either do:

a.) your PTT first
b.) your stage 3 first.

Once you've got your PTT - you become a BHS preliminary teacher once you do your child protection course and first aid course.

Once you've got your stage 3, ptt and you've logged I think 250 (or is it 500?) hours of teaching - you are awared your AI.

Edited to add: don't forget it costs rather a lot of money - stage 2 for example is £150 per complete (riding and horse care) to do the exam. Plus training, plus gold membership of the bhs
