You may have seen I mentioned in a thread of Imp's yesterday that a poor chap was brought onto the yard as an emergency late yesterday afternoon, having put his foot through the floor of a trailer during transit. Lovely boy, piebald cob. He was temporarily put in the empty stable next to Cherry and the emergency vet arrived only about 5 minutes after him. Blood was oozing from a nasty rear fetlock injury and he was not weight bearing but he did start tucking into some haylage! (typical cob! :o )

I was bedding Cherry down and heard the vet's sharp intake of breath and the words "Oh dear, that doesn't look good" so I have had this horrible feeling of doom all evening. When I got there at 6 this morning the stable was empty, a lovely untouched straw bed, full water bucket and haynet.

I have had a continuing nagging dread all day and when I got there tonight my worst fears were confirmed - the lad was PTS! :( They got him to vet hospital, anaesthetised him and whilst nothing was broken he had made a right mash up of the tendons and cartilage...... he never woke up again :(

I feel SOOOOO sad, this is the first encounter with the Rainbow Bridge that I have had and I feel so sorry for the owner. I didn't even know either of them although apparently he has been liveried at our yard in the past. He was 10 and she had had him for 6 years - yesterday was the first time he had seen a vet for an injury or illness.....

Yard was very subdued and sombre tonight.... :(

Cherry and lots of others got extra hugs too....

Sorry, just wanted to share.....

Oh thats awful! poor horse, and poor owners, and poor you, its not a nice thing to witness even when its not your horse :(
It sounds like they tried to do everything for him. It certainly makes you appreciate the time you spend with your horse.

Hugs to you x

Oh dear how aweful. So sorry to hear about the cob and his accident. Dreadful thing to have happened. He is out of pain now. He would probably never have come right again after that kind of injury. Thinking of you. L

Jane, that's awful... an empty stall :( I don't know what to say other than these things always make us take stock and count our own blessings don't they :(

<<<<< hugs >>>>> for you, it must feel very surreal at the moment.

It's so heartbreaking for us animal lovers when something happens to another's beloved pet. Extra hugs for all our horses tonight.

Aww, thanks everyone.... I still feel a bit of sheepish really, for getting myself so upset about a stranger and their horse! I suppose you can't help but put yourself in their shoes though and count your blessings.

I consider myself suitably "there, there'd" now :)

It just goes to prove you never know what is around the corner.:( That is why we must make everyday more special than yesterday. Remembering to love our family and four legged friends along the way..:)

The world would be a sorrier place if we could not feel sympathy and empathy for strangers and friends alike. Those that can't feel, hurt others. Those that feel, help heal.

(((((((hugs))))))) Think most of us here have been to that rainbow bridge. The pain will get easier with time.

That is so sad. :( We've had a few bad moments like that at our barn, and I usually sob quietly on my girls shoulder while she munches on the sudden onslaught of extra treats. I think it says a lot about you that you would get upset over this situation, so don't feel sheepish. :)

I'm so sorry, what an awful thing to happen :(

I'm crap with animals being hurt or dying even if it's only a cartoon (thinking Watership Down and the like here). It's the only thing that really brings me to tears.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Like Bay Mare, I only have to watch Bambi and I'm reduced to tears. It makes you appreciate the time spent with your own horse.

Very bad and sad:( We had a poor boy go a couple of weeks ago on the yard; he was a baby arab, chestnut. It was so sad, the owner is so down because she had nursed him through the cancer but it suddenly got worse, and she had to make The Decision. They put him in his best clothes and took some photies before they took him off to the vet, and to make it worse, he was a bit perky and cheeky that day. AAAARRRGH! Can hardly bear to think of it.

Oh Domane, I have just caught up. How awful. I know that empty space thing and its a nightmare. At least the poor lad was made comfortable and the end would have been peaceful. Makes you want to go and cuddle your own animals and hold them close.
