I've bin moved to a new horse and I've bin having trouble halting him lately, I've bin crashing into the fences lately when haulting after a line. My instructor said I can't keep doing it or she'll move me off the new horse and I really want to improve it, any help please?

ok, here is what worked for me when I had this problem. Ask your horse to stop waaay before you actually have to (if you stop a little early it's not the end of the world, it's better than the opposite) and when you ask your horse to stop REALLY slamm on the brokes (note: that does not mean tug on the bit like crazy) Sit your butt deep in the saddle like it's made of lead, lean back, squeeze with your upper thigh muscles (this will make your seat feel heavier) and gently slow him with your reins (if you need to, try saying a stern, loud, HO) Good Luck!

Are you sufficiently rebalanced in the saddle after the jump to ask for the halt with your seat? Or are you still leaning a bit forward, looking down, not quite in the saddle, etc?

As soon as you and the horse have sufficiently recovered your balance from the jump, sit upright and deep into the saddle, continuing to look up and forward as you ask for the halt with your seat. Still your hands, but do not pull. You can ask with a series of half-halts and squeeze-release type feels on the rein if he seems to ignore a steady feel.
