having been browsing through old threads came upon one about the dangers of underwire bras when riding. It's soooooooo obvious of course now I've seen it but never occurred to me!! So instantly had to hunt out a non-wired one - not very attractive but far better than getting stabbed - just think what they do to washing machines. On another safety issue, when RS get you to sign the "riding is dangerous" form why don't they also put on it about getting personal insurance? I know it wouldn't remove any liability they may have but my insurance covers lots of things like paying out money per week if I can't work. Thye wouldn't have to recommend any company but could point to possible websites. It took me ages to find one which just covered me and my kit (not owning a horse/trailer etc)

I couldn't find any thread on the dangers of underwire bras....

I ride in one all the time. Is it bad because the wire can poke you? I can't see how it could be so bad, although I'm not, ahem, terribly busty... I'm trying to imagine what kind of idiotic fall I would need to have paramedics use their "jaws of life" to extract me from my Gap Body bra....

Hi.

I always ride in an underwired bra. I found that soft bras , just did not suport me enough. I have thought a lot about the damage the wires can cause, and think that IF you wear a well fitting Sports type underwire bra, rather than a fashion version , you should be as safe as you can be. accients can and do happen, but I think this is one of the risks I am prepared to take.

it was in the general section in Feb 2006 from EML, didn't go into details but definitely referred to safety problems with them. Maybe someone can explain??

I ride in a shockabsorber bra, find that they 'strap them down' so much that you're practically flat chested! :D :p (definately eliminates bounce! ;) )
Guess that if the wire started to come out of the material could potentially be a bit nasty if you were to fall and land on it!

Just picked up this post. Yes I started it as it was something I always did until I attended an equestrian first aid course with a couple of guys who do duty at a lot of events.

In the event of a fall piercings and wires of any sort including underwires from bras can be driven into your body. They had a case of an underwire piercing a lung. Yes we are talking extremes of eventing but I have had wires displaced and causing nasty cuts in lesser falls. Take a wire out of an old bra and ask yourself if you would deliberately tuck it into your shirt before riding..they can be literally lethal weapons.

On forum open to all I won't disclose what sort of injuries piercings can cause!

Theoretically the wire could break and stab you between the ribs and possibly perforate a lung. Anyway the wires don't help with support when you are bouncing around. What is really required is support at the top. Janet Macdonald recommneds Playtex Cross-Your-Heart bras in "Riding Side Saddle" and if a bra stops you wobbling about on a side saddle it'll do it for any other equestrian discipline. (Spoken by one who sustained extensive bruising on the boobs and chest because she had a sitting trot lesson in a pretty but unsuitable bra!) Think I've said before that for the "larger lady", Triumph Doreen bras are good for support and comfort when riding. The sizes are a bit odd so buy where you can try. You wouldn't want to get run over in one, though, and they have been known to induce severe shock in husbands and boyfriends :D

There was a thread about bras and what types to ride in started in Feb. Hopefully I have attatched it correct.

I used to ride in underwire bras til one day I was out on a hack and suddenly felt a sharp pinch on my chest, I stopped and checked myself out (Thank goodness it was in some woods otherwise I would have looked someone in love with their boobs :D ) and felt the wire had broken in two and was poking through the bra and into me. I was quite shocked because if I fell off or something what would have happened if I had landed on the right angle for that to peirce my skin.

Since then if I ride I just make sure I wear a good sports bra :)

Even though some sports bras are now underwired I would never wear one, the best support for sports are non wired, they're safer, more comfortable and give better support. (I have just left a job as a lingerie buyer).

I would have thought that the chances of being stabbed by your underwired bra in the event of a fall would be 1000's to 1. It had never occured to me before, I have enough to worry about when I ride (like whether or not my mare is going to bomb off with me this time) to even begin to start to worry about what bra I'm wearing!

Whilst on the subject of bras, I used to have a really pretty one that I sometimes wore riding. Every time I cantered though, my left boob would pop out of it! It didn't happen in trot, just canter, and was always my left boob not my right!

Now I wear a sports bra, proper ones are really expensive (about £20/£25) but I go to Primark where you can get a fairly decent one for about a fiver!

It's not really the danger of piercing that would stop me wearing a wired bra riding but the total lack of support in the right places - I don't want droopy boobs. :)

Also Primark's may be cheap but their fabric may not last as long and certainly won't have been subject to the same stringent quality controls as more expensive underwear.

lol :D

I had an M&S sports bra that was like a crop top which was quite good for those of us who are, ahem, less blessed in the bust regions. But it's turned grey in the wash and is now just too depressing to wear!

I ride in an underwired bra too. Didn't think about getting stabbed tho. I take the view, what will be will be whatever.....
