Hi have been recently speaking to a friend, she was telling me how her horse has had a really bad kick in the field resulting in lots of vets bills and medication. She said she was quite worried as the vet has said her horse may have tendonitis as a result.she wasnt sure what tendonitis is but the vet has said that her leg will be pretty messed up and she will need lots of medical care and drugs to keep her pain free.Even though the kick is bad her horse isnt lame so will she get tendonitis?I think to tell a young girl this is quite negative,by all means point out the possibilties but he has more or less told her to put the horse to sleep- but she isnt lame at all at the moment.
How long after the kick would tendonitis show up show up?the vet wants to do x rays when the swelling goes down..i pressume to make sure the cannon bone isnt chipped. The horse isnt that young but doesnt act her age and is really not amused at box rest so has had 2 hours turn out to keep her from climbing out!(I know the horse and can see her doing this)
is it all doom and gloom ?
Any therapies medicines treatment to help her would be appreciated.

I have tendonitis in both wrists, it was caused but repetative use (repetative strain injury, RSI) it did stop me from doing the job I was doing (mechanic) but with some physio I can now do most things most of the time, occasionaly it gives me jip, I probably could have carried on as a mechanic but I made a decision that at 20 years old with the problem that I didn't want to be unable to work by the time I was 40 (by continuing doing the same thing that causes it you can just keep making it worse.
What happens is the tendon sheath becomes inflamed often at the point where it passes through a joint and it then all rubs together and causes pain.

I would say you need to talk to a vet you can trust and ask specifically about this horses injurys, I would have thought that they want to take Xrays to be able to look at the 'tunnels' the tendons run through, if they have been comprimised then it could be difficult to deal with but if not and it is just swelling that is causing the discomfort it should be fine and be able to be managed, It does also depend on if there was an open wound and the tendon sheath was compromised. Medication may be a big part of that management but then again it may not, you may find that a good joint supplement may help alot.

Tendonitis is just basically swelling of the tendons, can be caused by something instant, or over a longer period, but is usually triggered by specific things (like RSI). I can't see why, unless it happens just from standing that it would mean the horse would need to be PTS, but I eouldn't really know I'm afraid
