what the best way to get a pulled look on the tail without actually pulling?
i tried it with a solo comb once, that didnt work too well.

I have the cheapo version of the solo comb and it works okay on my TB as long as I have a good blade in it. Haven't tried it on thicker maned horses yet...
What seems to be the problem?

i dont like pulling, and when i used the solo comb on the tail it wasnt neat enough and made it look blocky.
her manes fine, my solo comb has gone blunt now but i did use that on her mane, now i just use comb and scissors.

Not sure if it works the same but with my cheapo version the trick is to
a) replace balde before it gets dull and
b) lay it almost parallel to the hair and then sweap down in one motion rather than cutting into the hair perpendicular
I don't like the regular pulling either. Not sure what other options there would be other than working on your technique with the comb?

there is a fine art to the solocomb - it takes a lot of practice and patience. i have just got the thing in kanuma's second link - the economy coat king in coarse - and it seems good, although i have only played with it a little bit. i dont; think it will do the entire job on its own, but it is a very useful addition to the box of tricks.

I use the Oster Mane & Tail trimmer from Clipper Sharp (see Kanuma's link). I'm still perfecting my art, but I think its a good tool, easy to use and gives a good finish.

Plait it, it looks fabulous and far better than a poorly pulled tail. (Don't think any new rules have surfaced banning plaited tails) The WH's tail was pulled badly before I got him and it has never really recovered. However, plaiting brings in all the short loose ends and makes him look very smart. It only takes about 5 minutes once you get the hang of it
