To start off a 10 x 10 pony box sized bed, and how many a week thereafter? Thanks:D

Two bales of shaving would suit that size box, and one a week thereafter, depending on how mucky yer hoss is. Harry started on 3 bales and is on one every 5 days and he is the muckiest hoss I've ever come across. He is also in a bigger stable than 10x10. Choose your shavings well, I use 'Hunter', because they are tightly packed and the coverage is good, but the loosely packed shavings will not cover the same area.

I used to start with 3 bales of shavings for a stable about that size, then add another each week when the bed started to go down :)

My horses stalls get so dirty by the next day, there really isn't a point in putting down a ton of shavings. They live in 12x12 box stalls with a dirt floor covered with rubber matting. Half a bag usually gives is a nice fluffy bed for the stall, and that needs to be changed every other day. To be honest, I don't see the point in putting a whole bunch down because your horse will pee in it 10 minutes later.

Do you have rubber matting? Milly is in a 12x12 stable and I think I put about 6 or 7 bales down to start with. She has no rubber matting and if the bed isnt thick enough she scuffs her hocks terribly.

No, no rubber matting yet, although will get some for next winter! I do like the beds nice and deep too, with the hard floor underneath:o Think I will get more than I probably need, then I can always keep some bales aside to use weekly if it looks like he might be up to his knees in it:D

It was because my horse scuffed her hocks no matter how much shavings I put down that I got the rubber matting. That was 10 years ago & have never had a problem since.

I would say 3 bales.

When I bedded down a 13'x10' stable for my heavyweight horse I used 8 bales of shavings (no matting). That gave me a deep bed that he didn't go to the bottom off & I only take the wet out every second or third day because the top of the bed stays dry.
