Easiest way to get this is to e-mail owners of horses with pictures that you are looking for, do a google search for what you want - for instance ''black leopard appaloosa stallion'' then browse what comes up.

Then write a letter explaining who you are and what you want to use the pictures for - i.e educational, simulated gaming etc - explain how and where the pictures will be used, also state that you will link back to the original website (if they want that, some don't) and that you will place a copyright notice underneath - or on the picture with their name, or the photographers name, if different.

Also be clear with them if you intend to digitally enhance or change the image, as some may not allow this. State if you intend to resize as well, and by how much - as this can alter the image and make it look, well a bit crappy.

Then thank them for their time, compliment the horses and wish them good day and say you hope to hear from them soon.

In general, there is a high percentage of positive results from this type of e-mailing, I co-admin a simulated horse club (http://www.hfshc.com - although the website is down, I think at the moment) - where people use pictures of real horses to represent simulated (pretend/fake) horses, and as long as you are up front and honest about the intentions you have with pictures, owners are quite happy to let you use them.
