I've started conditioning and plaiting Salsa's tail, and plaited it all up last night for the week. My intention is to take it out, condition it and re-plait once a week. However, I'm convinced that I have been told in the past that manes and tails shouldn't stay plaited longer than 24 hours at any one time, as it can damage the hairs and make them brittle, and in the tail, it can damage the circulation of blood through the boney part. Am I remembering correctly?

I plait my boys tail for weeks at a time, and for an arab x tb he has a lovely thick, long tail, so I don't think it has been doing it any harm.
Are you using CVB's wraping method (plaiting in tights)? I think the point of that is that it stops the hairs from rubbing across each other and conditioning weekly stops the hairs drying out and going brittle, also stops mud getting on the hairs which normally leaches all the oils out of the tail as it drys.
I only ever plait mine from below the dock, that way it doesn't interfere with the skin/circulation etc.

At the moment it's plaited from the top down, because I was killing some time last night and practised my plaiting technique on as many horses as I could get my hands on! In this case, should the plait come out sooner? I'm still trying to get hold of some tights to use CVB's tail wrapping method, and if I can't get any before Saturday I'll get some at the supermarket!
