I was due to have my 5th lesson today and it was going to be for an hour for the first time. However I manageed to crack 2 ribs yesterday so will not be riding for a bit. Soooooooooooo frustrating.

Poor you :( I broke a rib or two a couple of years ago and know how painful it is to do anything including breath. I can completely sympathise.

I don't know if they've given you any pain relief advice but I did 2 hourly painkillers - co-codamol and then ibuprofen and then co-codamol and then ibuprofen every two hours (be careful with the paracetamol based pain relief though, don't whatever you do take more than the maximum dosage, that stuff is LETHAL). The co-codamol was better than the ibuprofen but combining the two kept the pain pretty much under control, it was only at the end of the ibuprofen dose that the pain started to kick in again.

Definitely don't ride. I wasn't allowed by the RS though I know that some people do! I couldn't even put my boots on so it wasn't a viable possibility anyway but I did turn up for my group lesson (dumb I know). The thing is that if you come off again (if you can even get up there to start with) there's a very real risk of puncturing a lung. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to my own health but not that stupid :)

I think that I was off riding for about 5 weeks in total.

All the best and hope that you heal quickly. Go along and watch lessons if you get withdrawal symptoms :)

I've had cracked ribs- it's not as bad as broken ribs apparently but very memorable!!

It took me a long time to fully heal. I would wake through the night because I was lying on that side- it made for lots of restless nights because it was on the side I tended to sleep on!

Hope you feel better soon. I still rode but I was not at a school where they probably would have told me not to! It was uncomfortable- if I remember correctly was bed ridden for the first three days or so immediately after the riding fall which caused the injury!

ouch!! how did you do that? riding?

Hope they get better soon, and you get back to riding as soon as you are allowed.

Ouch, I cracked my ribs last year and it was really painful. I had to be helped out of bed every morning by OH as I couldn't get up, couldn't drive - although did drive home after the accident - took me 20 mins to get out of the car. Co-codamol was my friend :D Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for all the support and advice guys, I am a football coach in my real life and did it at work trying to show a player how to catch a cross. I got clobbered by another player who got a bit over excited! It is painful and I am on pain killers but it is more frustrating as I am just starting to think I am able to trot etc without help. I am really keen to ride as much as possible and then this happens.

I agree that there is no way I can ride, I cant mount for a start, rising trot would be very painful, dismounting fills me with dread and as for falling.....lets not go there.

take good care of yourself and I'm sure you'll be back in the saddle soon.

If you are in pain, your body definately wants time to recover! ;)

How are you feeling now? It shouldn't be QUITE as painful to breathe as it was 10 days ago :( I hope that you're feeling better but still keep taking the painkillers as it took me almost a month to be pain free. I tried coming off them (don't like taking them) after 2 weeks and quickly realised that I was being dumb!

Edited because I can't spell!

Poor you.

I had a bad fall last year and suspect I cracked my ribs too (don't like to go to hospital unless it'slife threatening).

I remember waking up in the night and wanting to go to the toilet but was in so much pain I coun't get out of bed!

It does get better eventually, just take it steady, keep taking the painkillers.

I could ride (very gently) after about 3 weeks but couldn't canter or do any sitting trot for a good few months.

Take care :o
