Yuck! Found this in poor Jester's poo after worming him the day he arrived. It measures 11 inches long. Thought it was a snake!
Bet he feels much better now and worm is in vets keeping for further worming advice. Anyone had a bigger one?

OMG Poor Jester! My computer monitor is quite large so I got to see your picture real size.

If that was only one I can only imagine how much more is in there! And hopefully there's no permanent damage.
Did the vet put him on a mild daily deworming program?

BTW what type of worm is that?

Ewww.. that's nasty! I've never seen a photo of a worm before.. always vague drawings :D . What did the vet think of your discovery?

Ugh....how vile and disgusting! :( Are you sure that it didn't crawl into his poo after he made it, or was it inside of him? It's hard to believe something that big came out of a horse!

Apparently this is a large (understatement) roundworm.

That is just too disgusting. I would have fainted just looking at it.

I thought I read that even with deworming, horses still carry a worm burden - is that true or not? I'd like to think that they don't carry worms as big as that one. Icky.

I didn't know that worms could be so big! What a horrible thought to think of worms that size inside him. I hope that you get him worm free quickly! I wonder when he was last wormed?

What a fab picture.
Roundworm are not so common in adult horses, more in foals and youngsters who have been neglected or never wormed. They are easily dealt with by standard worming.

Most of the worm eggs we see when doing tests are redworm, strongyles. Roundworm eggs are much less common.

Do you know anything about your pony's past? I would not want to see worms like that, but at least they are coming out!

He was in a trekking center since a 4 yr old (now 15) on Dartmoor and out on loan to a local farming family over the winter. They told me they wormed him with Equitape in December. I wormed with Equest last week on arrival. The only other worms produced were bots. He does look better already - less tucked up - but that may be due to the fact that he previously was quite bullied and perhaps kept off the hay. Now he is in at night and eats enormous piles of the stuff.

Oh I have seen worms like that on a grand scale, about 20 that size with assorted sized red worms.

They came out of a hill mare, I don't suppose she'd ever been wormed in her life. We got her as the SSPCA asked us to get her off the hill as her feet were so bad. She had lice too.

Bot, thank goodness is something we don't seem to get thank goodness.

What do bot worms look like? any photo's Flump:D

Bots aren't a worm as such but a life stage of a fly, it looks like a big chrysallis (SP?) like a giant, hard shelled grub with segments about the size of the last joint of your thumb. No head you could make out though.

Bit like a bad episode of Dr.WHo! ;)

EWW, i remember a similar story of something bigger coming out of a Suffolk punch mare that had been rescued by my old RS, she also came with poor feet, skin probs and eye infections. And also her coat didnt grow back very well when she molted cus she was so malnourished

Wally they are disgusting:eek: Do we get these is scotland?

Wally
13th Mar 2006, 02:09 PM
You might on the Mainland, we don;t seem to get them here, I have never seen a botfly here at all, never seen the eggs or the bots.

You will see yellow eggs on the legs of the horse in summer. Smaller than a pinhead, bright yellow and laid on the hairs on the legs. You need to remove them with a bot knife or bic safety razors.

Wow, never thought I would deliberately click on a posting entitled "disgusting giant worm photo".... I must be horse mad;) Poor horse, hope he feels better.

Are there any worms/parasites that can be transmitted from horses to people?

Wally

Tape worms, but you'd be unlucky.

Keep your dogs and cats wormed properly, this will help keep the incidents of tape worm in nags down.

I've not seen a worm that big, but have seen a stable walls plastered in red-worms the morning after a worming session (not mine i hasten to add!!) looked like someone had thrown a big pan of noodles around. think tapeworm are up there with bots for gross-ness, which reminds me - i must repeat worm count and re-do her for tape.

isnt the yuck factor great?!!

When I got my filly at the end of 2004 I wormed her quite heavily before putting her out with the others, her stable was smothered with Roundworms (that size) and bot larve there were literally 100's of them, it was gross.
If there was 1 that big I would guess at there being more, when my filly had loads I dosed again 4 weeks later just to be sure (on advise from a vet) but didn't find any more. I would check with your vet but might be worth giving another dose sooner than normal, what would you think Gill?

Jessey, roundworm are usually easily treated with normal wormers. It does rather make you think that his past worming has been sadly lacking.
I would definitely want to do a count for redworm though to make sure they had been adequately treated, not to mention encysted stages which do not lay eggs so can't be seen in a count.
Only a vet should prescribe extra doses, otherwise stick to the correct gaps, but make sure you are using the right product in the first place.

We put some ponies to the hill one autumn, all the same age, all the same breed, they were wormed the day they went out. Got them back about 8 weeks later, got them home and wormed again. One mare in the group had red poo, not just a few worms but her entire poo was red. She even passed part of her gut, it was horrifying, we felt dreadful becasue we thought her worming was up to date and good.

All the other ponies who were out with her were fine, just the odd tiny red worm and that was it, and you have to look hard to find them (a hobby of mine which folk laugh about!!)

Another thing for the easter hols list - worm countfor all 4 - Gill expect an e-mail!!!
About bots in Scotland - have never seen them til last summer - when filly had bot eggs on her legs. As she came from a stud that was giving up I wondered it a bot had come up in a lorry picking up another pony - if so I hope it died!!!!

If they make an appearance in scotland I am emigrating - already midges have come over from the west coast to Perth - bots as well will just be too much!!!

Ahhh, so I'm not the only one with the rubbergloves on at worming time picking up the pooh, breaking it up and going 'oohhh, look at that one... see I told you they needed doing as regularly as they say....'?!

My YO's 5year old son thinks it's great fun 'finding the wormies' and has his own rubber gloves to 'help' with... YO isn't so impressed, can't think why;)

Thanks Happy Highlande.

Hairycob the point of using counts is that they often don't need doing as regularly. Mostly you don't see worms after worming unless there was too great a burden to start with.

My ponies sometimes show a low worm count when I test them but I've yet to see a worm after worming.

PS you (and I) have some strange hobbies!

That is one ridiculously disgusting worm. Just thinking about things like that are making me paranoid.

Do they always come out after you give them wormer?
