1) Is an 18 month old colt feeling his hormones yet?;)

2) And how quickly after gelding do things start to settle/calm down confused:

Thanks!

:) :o

#1 I've been told a big "yes" by a vet & other horsepeople just this past week.

It's comming up to Spring, some colts will start showing 'colty' behaviour. It depends on the horse as to how long it takes for the hormones to settle, we had a colt entire till he was six months old and he settled down pretty quick, we had a four year old who took ages to calm down and our stallion was done at 8 and didn't change one little bit.

1 - almost definitely. they can start getting fruity as young as while they are still with mum.

2 - i think it's 6 weeks for them to be infertile - sperm can live in the 'tubes' and survive for that long. hormone-wise, behaviour often changes reaosnalby soon after the snip if the hors is young enough for behaviour not to be ingrained.

How long is recovery after the snip?? We are hoping our potential loan pony will get the snip this week. Just waiting for the cold snap to go..

It varies from horse to horse how long it takes to heal. A safe bet is about 4 weeks, if there are no complications.

My colt developed some rather large clots and using the hosepipe to clear them out didn't work - I know it sounds cruel, I wasn't that impressed having to do it!

The vet had to scoop them out - literally! But if you don't get an infection, you should be ok in a few weeks.

yes, i wouldn't worry about the cold - fewer flies, less mud if it is all frozen!

the things to avoid are mud and flies - so it is usually done in spring or autumn - not wet or hot weather.

Could you give us a run through of the procedure too please?:D And aftercare, what do you have to do re. cleaning it/leaving it alone etc? Stabling/turnout?

Thank you for advise. I was concerned his owner may consider letting us have in in a fortnight. My concern was the travelling whilst recovering..

Definatly yes, my boy sired a colt at just 2 years old :o

I didn't have Bo cut till he was 4, he was back in work in a week as it had healed very well but he never calmed down - he still doesn't know they are missing :p
