We are waiting on the results of a swab that was taken by the vet on saturday morning. One of the geldings that Milly is turned out with was a little lame on friday so we put him and Milly in the sick paddock together. I brought the two of them in on friday night and Finn was coughing and had a thick strange colour discharge coming out of his nose. There are a few cases of strangles nearby so alarm bells started ringing. The vet said he would come out the next morning, there were no lumps so the vet said he wanted to wait and see if they appeared.
We have been told to treat it as if it is strangles for now so no one is allowed in each others stables and everything has to be disinfected and obviously the horse is in quarantine. I asked the vet about Milly picking something up as she was with him all day but he said to just keep an eye on her. She isnt showing any signs at the moment so fingers crossed its just a respiratory infection.
Some people may remember me asking about the strangles vaccine a few weeks ago, everyone on the yard except one person agreed they wanted it done but it just so happened that the person who didnt want it done (as her vet had told her she wouldnt be allowed to leave the yard and she would miss her hunts) is the YO's friend so I get the feeling she was holding off having it done for a while to help her friend out. If it turns out to be strangles i'll be annoyed we didnt just take matters into our own hands and arrange having the vaccine done ourselves, I guess you should never leave things like this to other people.
