View Full Version : 13.2 too small!!!

im in the process of finding a new horse for my mum. she rides our 12hh section a with no problems at all, except she hasnt had much cantering practice (shes scared of it) and susie finds it a bit too much sometimes when mum canters or jumps her (she bucks). so im looking for different types.
mum says she wants a 14.2 middleweight, i think that this type of horse would be too much for her at the moment, they tend to be slightly whizzy.
she wants ne that is a bigger version of susie, shes quite forward going and can be spooky, but shes very safe, i thinkif she got a horse similar to this, in a 14.2, she would get scared, now a 13.2 version of above wouldnt scare her so much (shes alot more confident on/around smaller ponies)
she doesnt look too bad on susie, and i think a 13.2 would be a good height, but she insists it will be too small:rolleyes: she doesnt want people to think shes riding a pony, she thinks they will pity her and she will be looked on as useless because she rides a pony:rolleyes:
ive found a nice looking and sounding pony that i think will suit her, but again she said its too small.
so will a slightly heavier than middle weight pony (prob a native) have a problem with a 10 1/2 - 11 stone (dont know for sure) rider?
this is the sort of pony im looking at

doesn't she want to do pleasure rides or somesuch ? it'll make a bit of a difference...
our 13.2 Fell carries me fine for what we do - but I wouldn't ask him to carry me long distance or over bigger jumps. (Tho I confess to being over your suggested weight range :( )
Not all 14.2s are whizzy....I rode a friend's 14hh ride and drive once and had the most boring hack of my life

yea, we want to do fun rides and with the right horse some le trec.
my friend has a 14.2 that my mum is in love with, but hes a hw again, and only a few inches shorter than the horse she has now, so most likely have the same problems.
i think that as she doesnt want a completly dead horse, she wants one that moves, but is sane and safe, i think that if a 14.2 type (shes told me she wants one the same build as a friends horse i know, she was a middle weight eventer type) i think if that horse jogged or went a bit quick it would scare her half to death.

Well Rupert jumped with me no problem when I was just over 11 stone (4 months pregnant), he did buck me off  but that was over-excitement as opposed to weight (I should have known better he always bucks if pushed into new things too fast - even when I was 9 stone as opposed to 11..). However I have no idea how he would react to a long ride with me that weight, I am still over the 11 stone after having Beth (although loosing it all the time - yay!) so have no intention of doing anything other than light pottering with him until he is fitter and I am lighter.
He is a 13.2hh New Forest type.
Would steer clear of the babies of this size with someone that weight but wouldn't see a problem with the older, stockier ones. I know you weren't necessarily looking at Lucky in the Ad but he looks decidedly gangly - suggests to me that he is younger than 5 and going to be bigger than 13.2hh but I might be wrong. Something looks odd about his proportions..
Incidentally a Rupert type 13.2hh would certainly scare her - he is fizzy and daft and jogs, scuttles and can spin on the spot.....

Was that Strauss Wally? What a fantastic stamp of horse.
No_Angel - my 13 hh Icelandic carries me without a hassle, Wally will vouch for the weight carrying abilities of Icelandics, or does your mum want a more conventional horse/pony?

if she wants to jump, perhaps wally and some of the other Icie owners could comment on the thing about whether Icies jump or not ? (I have heard it said that they don't jump).

i was actually showing her the videos of the icelandics form the link you gave me last night and she was liking them and loved the manes:D
but, what i think is a stupid reason, she doesnt want to be looked down on and pityed (sp?) for riding a pony. theres a lady at one of our local shows and she hasnt been riding long, she has a pony (coloured cob type about 14 hands) and they jump, everyone claps her after shes finished, and mum thinks they feel sorry for her, and she doesnt want to be viewed the same way.
she likes haffies and fjords, i liked the look of iceys as they are gaited and apparently very smooth to ride so it might help her back problem, but they seem to be very expensive:(

but you also said "yea, we want to do fun rides and with the right horse some le trec." which implies some jumping, unless she skips all those obstacles and loses those points ?

with le trec you dont have to jump if you dont want to, yo can miss out on the jumping. she would rather do the obstacle course and the ride.
she doesnt like compeing alot either, so its more the le trec training, where you dont have to jump ( i jumped both horses around the course)

with the natives you dont tend to get looked down on.
Stan is 14hh and is a wide lad (at the moment could put a tank to shame) he will happily carry 16 stone when he is fit (im alot less then this im more in the range of your mum)!
suggest a 14hher and see how you get on
this is stan the man carrying me (at about 11 stone ish) at a show and still manageing to tank quite easily! (he like to think he is a 17hh racehorse, he did keep up with a 17hh hunter once in a show class!)

Get an Icelandic - they are technically known as horses rather than ponies - sorted :p
It can be an issue, I have found I needed a bit of a thick skin when I first got Rupert, now I am immune and everyone is used to him (mind you I have never shown him and I think some of it was in my own head :o ). Now I am moving to near Wally I will just set Wally and Ljossie on anyone who dares comment :D Waiting with baited breath to see who is madder - Rupert or Ljossie ;)

Some of our Icelandics jump and some certainly do not. It is just luck really and training at a reasonable age - they will certainly all have a go, whether they get over with legs in any order, is a different kettle of fish!

Might be quite a simplistic view, but I'd stop looking at heights.
Forget what it says on paper, remember between 13.2 and 15h we're only talking 5" difference, so provided your mum likes the horse, feels comfortable and safe on it, pick the temprement to suit what you want to do, rather than the number.

shes adament shes wants a 14-14.2. no amount of pursuading or this horse is perfect for you will sway her.
ive found a few horses on the net for her to look at and shes just said no to all of them:(

push for the 14hh side. i promise you they are not that much different to the 13.2s

Yup that was Strauss, ambatt.
They might think they feel sorry for her on a small horse, I feel sorry for me too! :D :D sometimes. Just because I have to concentrate much, much harder and anticipate every move my little 13.1hh horse does. It' will be interesting to meet Rupert, but he can't be any more artistic then Ljóssie....can he??
Folk have this idea that M&M are for kids, they are kid's ponies right? they are small, Thelwell made a mint depicting them in his cartoons, but in reality they are small horses of huge intelligence, quickthinking and acting sometimes and never. NEVER to be looked down upon.

I'm not just trying to be difficult, I am just genuinely confused here, but why are you SO desperate for your mum to have a 13.2hh??

i want her to have a horse she feels safe on. shes a very nervous person anyway, and with a horse shes worse. shes fine on the ground (except when they start running around and being silly) but she feels happier with smaller ponies.
we have a 12hh pony now, she does everything with her and loves her to bits, she canters her, jumps her (sort of) and schools in an open space. shes deathly afraid of open fields when riding, but she knowes if susie starts being silly she can easily get off can feel more confident about the situation because the pony is smaller.
my first pony was a 14hh new forest/cob type (pic http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/madams_walk/razzandme2.jpg) he scared her soo much that she wouldnt ride him for years. he was a very screwed up pony, and we think he was a rig, in the end he was sold to a horse whisperer for a nominal amount.
this is the type she would go for if she were to have a 14/14.2 and i just know that she wouldnt be able to cope, razz was too big and too strong for her to feel comfortable around, so i feel that it would be in her best interests if she had a smaller one so that she could at least feel confident in the situation.
if we could use our section a for the things we want to do we would, as she is the most perfect pony in the world. ( i want one of these in a 13.2 please! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/madams_walk/susieposing2.jpg)

How about a Highland - they can go fast or slow and are very lovable?
And if anyone pities you - you can run them over!!! - My gelding looks like a warhorse as he canters towards you! They are all under 14.2 - but can be ridden by anyone (even 6' men)

ive looked into highlands, but im worried that they will be too strong for her, we have a large horse at the moment (pic http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/madams_walk/smurfinwaterresized.jpg) hes very sweet and 90% prefect, but hes very strong and like a tank, worried a highland would be similar as they are the same kind of build.

They don't have to be strong - it all depends on the schooling. I have a friend who returned to riding late and is not the most confident person - hers is great - can gallop when asked, but stops when asked too. Mine does too - except whe I pour oats down him to whizz him up - but that it another story.....
Don't write them off - go and see any in your area- -look at the highland pony society sales list and nativeponymart and horsequest - not being disloyal as I know there are none on Newrider sales - I checked!!!

that photo is actually quite deceptive, hes a hw cob with 11 inches of bone, and that pic makes his legs look skinny, this is the fat lad http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b242/madams_walk/murf2resized.jpg

What a shame your selling him, he looks lovely.
I agree on Highlands, they can be virtually anything you want them to be. A friend of mine bred highlands in scotland and I know they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, if you dont want a pure bred one some of the crosses are gorgeous.
Good luck in finding something for your mum. God I hope my kids look after me as well as you look after her if I were to get a "wibble"

I can see the small size issue but to be honest I would be far happier putting a nervous rider on Alfie who is a 15.2hh tank than Rupert who is 13.2hh and can react faster than I can! Good luck :)

i would also my mum be on murf than my old pony razz, i usualy start put people who cant ride (my sisters friends usually) on murf, but my mum actualy gets on with susie our little one really well, susie is quite sharp, a legs off sort of pony, she very quick witted and can be spooky and quick, but shes very safe, not the sort of horse i thought my mum would like as i thought shed be nervous when she suddenly spooked, but mum loves her to bits. we took susie and murf out in the trailer for a hack and were trotting down a narrow wooded path, susie suddenly spooked and shot sideways and my mum didnt budge or even care! she just carried on trotting. The other day mum got off murf as he grew a bit when he saw a plastic bag in a bush, he didnt even spook:rolleyes:
weve enquired about a few, a 14.2 coloured middleweight mare whos only 5 but is supposed to be very calm, and a 14.3 black cob mare. so we shall see what happens, but im still on the look out.
Im actually hoping mum will get one on loan so we can keep murf and i will have him for showing and schooling till my arms better, hes such a lovely boy and i get on with him so well, we were having lovely cuddles and bum scrathes this morning:D
