Hi i have just got a new stocky welsh sec A pony, I am 5,2 and weigh about 8 1/2 stone and he is 12hands. He is very green although 16 years old (behaves like a 3 year old!) Do you think its ok for me to train him to pop a small course of fences and do some longer hacks with him with perhaps a few canters? I am paranoid that i am too big for him but my friends say we look well matched, he has had a really boring life (been stood in a field for nine years and only ridden a fews times a month), so i thought it might be nice for him to do something exciting as he certainly has the energy for it! Thanks! Hannah

Hi :)
I'm 5' 2" and weigh 7 1/2 stone. My pony is a chunky Welsh A x NF and he carries me no problem. Looking at pictures of the pair of us, I don't actually look that big on him! I'm planning to do working hunter classes with him and general bombing around the countryside.
I'm sure your pony will have no problem carrying you. :)

Welcome to the site:)
I have a stocky Sec A and he could carry you easily. They are clever little horses and need to keep active so you would be doing him a great favour getting him working again.
What you suggest sounds very managable just try to bring him back into work gradually and get him fit before working him too hard. Enjoy:D

Hey Hannah, welcome to the site.
You and your pony will be great. You could soon tell anyway if you were hurting him. I ride a 35" shetland (8.7HH) and I'm 5'2, 11/12-stone, so the skies the limit. Even my husband who is 6'1 has a hoot hacking with her.
Regards,
Katie

So far this pony has been 8.9hh, 8.7hh, 35", you've been 5'6", now down to 5'2" and you've weighed anywhere between 10 and 12 stone.
There is a limit to our patience.

Hiya,
Before anyone says anything I know I am not a mature rider, but I saw this in the New Posts section!;)
I honestly hope you are not too big for him! I ride/show/hack/jump a 12hh sec A and I am 5ft4 and about the same weight as you! As long as he feels comfortable carrying you (and there is no reason why he shouldn't) you'll be fine!

A 35" Welsh A????
Are we speaking 8.9hh or nearly 9hh! This is a tiny Shetland size and not one for the ridden ring.
A 10 hand 2 inch shetland is the maximum 42 inches...jsut for reference.

I can't find any reference to a 35" Welsh A Wally  but both the welsh A riders say theirs are 12hh, its is xkatiex and her '35" (8.7hh) shetland' you are thinking of I think. :)

Ahh, sorry,
What is a 8.7hh Shetland? 8 point 7, which is nearly 9 hh which is 36 inches or is it 8 hands 7 inches....which makes is 39 inches....or is my maths way out???

Hi Hannah. I'm sure your pony will let you know if he finds you too heavy. Take it gently and see how you go!
xKatiex I'm sorry but I'd have a hoot if I saw a 6'1 man hacking a 55" Shetland. He must have the poor Shetland hoisted up between his legs. On the plus side though, no worries weight wise - he'll be carrying the pony.

and she has done, with no problem, when I rode her :-)
I'm 5'7" and currently a bit over 12 stone , and though Julia's pony definitely felt smaller than what I usually ride she didn't feel too small / I didn't feel too big for her.
At 5'2" you can take full advantage of being the right size to have all sorts of fun on ponies!

Im about 5ft7 and I weigh about 9 stone. Today i schooled a 12hh welsh secA. She didn't buck me off or try to bite me when I got off, so she must be ok with it (sweet pony, but has a few 'issues'). Ok so I look way too big on her with my legs hanging round her knees, but I actually fitted in the saddle.
I have ridden anything from standard shetties to 17.2 heavy horses, and I will be backing an exmoor this summer (everyone else can ride when he's matured a bit more)

Hello and welcome!
We have a section A 2 year old.. so watching the weight thing with interest!
I must admit i was surprised today when my RI said his new Section B is capable of carrying 14 stone!! and my section a will be the same when fully grown and fit. :) not sure if people disagree with this though, but my RI has competed professionally and I trust him, and all he knows to be honest! :)
