View Full Version : Cooper's 7th Day - Whatagoodboyyyy!

Once again we thought we would leave him for most of the day in the field - great way to use up all of his energy before we ride him.

We headed to the yard about 1400hrs and made a start on sprucing up the parlour - will post on that one seperately.;)

It was such a lovely day that when we stopped for a cup of tea/coffee and a sandwich we sat outside his stable.

Checked out the school and there were 3 ponies with young riders and a few parents hanging around - some of whom were yard staff. We thought this an ideal situation to bring in Cooper as he seems to appreciate company in the school with him.

OH volunteered to catch him - took him ages - Cooper was as far as the eye can see and around the corner in his field.

OH was pooped by the time he got back:p

Once again - this was to be a short session of only about 10mins max each.

Thankgoodness, it was just great!:D

Whatagoodoyyyy!! How many times have I said that this week:rolleyes:

He was very alert and aware of the horses in the field outside and was equally interested in the small furry animals half his size in the school with him.:p

I mounted first and began in walk doing 10m circles in the corners of the school as part of our homework exercises.

Then we did a trot - still in the treeless YES! -

It wasn't too bad really once we got going - I used the neck strap to make sure my hands were not too bouncy. I think my problem all week was getting used to the bounce, his spookyness and my nervy nellyousness (I think I just made that word up )

He moved in off the track quite a bit on one occasion going down the long side that was next to the field but I was firm with him and used lots of inside leg and opened my hand of the outside rein to put him back on the track.

http://www.clipshack.com/Clip.aspx?key=4DCFC73DBFAD88E1

Yeah! I am riding my horsey!!

Changed the rein and repeated the excercises on the right rein and then dismounted - all totally uneventful. He was certainly no ploddy ride which was good but needed encouragement to listen but I think I got there with him.
As I managed to trot so much I got a lot of practice in the new saddle and as a result managed to get used to it.

As you can see from the clip I am no dressage girl but given the issues that I was having during the week I don't think I did too badly at all.

With all of the parlour cleaning and the sunshine we were able to ride without jackets but I still had 3 layers on!

After a whole 15 mins and I had finished his exercises and was bursting with glee inside I dismounted finishing on a truely great note

OH then rode him. Once again, like me, he did much better than on previous days - hands not quite so bouncy but still having the problems where his legs are going a little too far back.

I'm sure RI will help us work on that while we wait to get another saddle sorted.

I was absolutely and utterly thrilled with Cooper and myself for todays achievement. I feel that I can ride my horse now.

Spoke to yet another few liveries today who said their horses spook in that school and they only ever go into it if there is another horse exercising as this seems to settle them.

Now in the long term it would be nice to have a non spooky horse and we can work on that over the years but in the short term I will be happy to try and coincide my rides with others exercising. Only time that is a problem is when we book it for lessons with RI but she may be able to help us overcome such problems and help us to make him spook proof and at the same time ensuring that he is just not taking the mick!!

Lots of grooming, cuddles, carrots and hay followed.

We don't hand feed him anything in order to avoid any nibbling issues - we just break up the carrots and hide them in his hay and he gets a surprise crunch every now and again - usually only when mum and dad are around;)

He picked up all 4 feet again, no barging and when I brought his hard feed in which he adores I made him back up and 'stand!' and he did while I set it on the floor and walked away! Marvellous!

We then headed back home to get myself and my clothes ready for the dreaded W tomorrow :(

I remember reading on a different post of how someone who used to be quite houseproud then bought a horse and all of a sudden she was happy with saddles, tack, hay and all sorts of stuff hanging around the house.

This is the dining room with saddle.

This is the back of the kitchen door with the bridle.

Please note the wine, the rosettes, the apron and the bridle - I think Cooper has well and truely integrated.

I am sure there will be many more ups and downs to share with you all but I am delighted to be ending the week on a high after all I have got work to deal with tomorrow.

Thank you all so much for your help and encouragement through the week. I know that you know you havn't heard the last of me and Cooper.

I'll probably give you a weekly and not daily tale of our journey together from now on as I'll be a busy girl trying to cope with work and horse for the first time.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Best wishes for now,

Dee

P.S. Please no critiques of my riding we'll save that for another day.
Thx.

Dee, I think you are riding marvellously well in the treeless- I couldn't ride in one of those bloody things at all!

What a wonderful week you've had, made lots of progress and started to build a bond with Cooper.... fantastic!

Guarantee that by about 3pm tomorrow you'll be having those butterflies like you get when you're going on a first date with a boy you really like and are about 13.... you won't be able to concentrate on work and won't be able to wait for 5pm (or whatever time you finish!) to arrive so you can go see your boy!

Good luck with going back to work and making the transition to 'working horse owner'. It's hard, but thousands of us do it, and I'm sure you'll be fine, especially as your OH is as interested as you- what a bonus!:D

Wow I am so pleased for you all:D I think you have picked yourselfs a super horse :D
I will miss the daily updates, but will look forward to the weekly ones:D

I hope you have a wonderful week with your new boy, and the clocks change next weekend so you will have even more time to play:D

I've enjoyed the daily updates too :) Please keep doing at least a weekly one with pics/vids!
I still have another week off work but next Sun will be my D-Day ready for Monday :( I can tell how I'll feel about that already!
PS Your school looks enormous - much bigger than the piddly little one I get to go in  Any idea how big it is?

Well done and I will wait with baited breath for the next instalment, I'm so glad your enjoying your boy, we have a large coloured chap too who is totally adorable and has been the most marvellous addition to our happy band, he's only young but so loving a wee bit dozy sometimes but thats his charm, keep us up to date with your progress with the treeless as well as I'm looking at the barefoot Cheyennes. All the best.:D

That's great Whataneejit. :D What a difference. Taking it slowly is the answer. if you're getting respect on the ground, and taking it one step at a time riding, and getting help from a really good RI, and best of all enjoying it, then you're doing all the right things. He is gorgeous.:D Love the video clips BTW. I must have a go and see if I can do some.

Hi Dee,

What lovely footage, you'll treasure that, I really have enjoyed your week off myself! You look really relaxed in both vids, he has got a lovely spring in his step hasn't he? :D

I know how you feel, it really feels like each tiny thing that goes right is a major achievement. I swell with pride when other liveries say what a difference in Megan since coming to us from the riding school. I can see it myself and having laid down firm boundaries we can soften a bit as she knows the rules now; she backs up and stands away with her head averted when the food bowl arrives and is placed, she picks up her feet before I've touched them and walks towards me in the field when I have to go in to get her out (she'll even walk past the mob at the gate if I'm with her - at speed though  ) I FEEL SO PROUD of her I could shout from the roof tops :o I must get out more :o :o I think that's why I've enjoyed your diaries this week. I totally relate to how you feel :D :D

I like Domane's abbreviation of your user name, W'jit - and so it came to pass :p .

NN- the dreaded 'W' is what pays for Coopers luxury lifestyle...WORK!

W'jit has gone back to work today, so there won't be daily updates any more, though I think she's planning on weekly ones!

Dolly and I have taken over the daily updates for this week, as I'm off work now:D ;)

Please do TRY to keep up!;) :D ;)

I knew you would catch me out HH.. I have been keeping up with your posts even if you hide them in another forum.:p I was a bit naive, I thought W meant a horsey term which I hadnt caught up on. I tend to forget about work. Even when I am at work I am not really there in mind just body..:D

BTW NN (an anyone else who has trouble 'finding' posts!) Did you know that when you log in, if you click on 'New Posts' in the bar at the top, it shows you all the new threads and threads that have been replied to since your last visit?

That's how us 'old timers' get about so much- I never even look to see which forum threads are in anymore- if the title grabs my interest I have a look!:D
Sorry if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs as it were!;)

Sorry for using abbreviations NN but I couldn't bring myself to say it - often how men feel about using the M word (marriage shh!).

OH and I have made a pact not to talk about W when we are anywhere near the yard or Cooper - worked v.nicely last night when we were grooming him.
:D

I'm glad you guys have enjoyed the posts - it is often a toss up in my head of - am I boring the pants off these people and they truely think - whatanejit! - or is it entertaining?

It has actually been a bit of 'therapy' writing them - especially the nervous nellie moments.

Thanks for reading peeps;) ;)

I for one have found them very interesting and entertaining and have looked forward to them each night- was getting quite impatient for my Cooper fix on Friday whilst you were getting sloshed at the pub!!

I know the feeling about wondering if what you write is boring the pants off people- I often feel the same way about my Dolly posts... but I figure if folk don't want to read them they don't have to, and I know at least *some* folk like to hear how we are getting on:D

Looking forward to the next Cooper update... especially if there's more videos!:D ;)

Completely agree with HC here, W'jit. :) I have really enjoyed reading your posts, and have loved the little video clips. It seems to bring it alive somehow.

I also know how you feel about boring people. I wonder if I do that with my Sennie exploits. But I know how much I enjoy hearing about how people are doing, and miss them when they stop posting. (Madmuminkent, where are you these days?). Like you say HC, people don't have to read them. (loved it when someone on another forum referred to you as "Hairy" by the way, made me LOL:D ).I've owned Sennie for two years next week, and have been through all the new horse bit, so hopefully some people are interested in the light at the end of the tunnel stuff.

Looking forward to the weekly updates.:)

Posts like yours revive in me the sense of why do we keep horses and all the fun. Thanks for sharing.

What treeless saddle do you use?

We bought the Trekker Talent - getting used to it slowly - having a proper lesson on it tonight to get help with absorbing the movement:eek:

I'll keep you all posted.

I really love reading about your days with your handsome "new man", even though I have just got in from 9-2 at the yard I still want to read about what is happening at someone elses!
Cooper has great parents in you and your OH. Can't wait to see how things develop. :)
PS Love the parlour!

I've really enjoyed all your Cooper threads, W'jit (is it just me, or does the apostrophe in that abbreviation make it look appropriately Irish?). You all look like you're having such a great time -- it's really cheering.

Wish my share pony had a parlour. She's on box rest at the moment and we were joking about getting her a sofa and a TV... except I wasn't really joking, I'd love to go down there and have a cup of tea with her!

Try that with Sennie, and he'd have at least half the cup of tea.;)

He is still trying to have a nosey around the door every time we are in the parlour.

I sat in the chair last night for 20 mins at the parlour door with a cup of tea watching him eat and search through his hay for the carrots that I had hidden for him.

Very relaxing.:)
