Ok help me out there, I was thinking about this last night, from what I remember Anlgo Arabs decend from TB's and Arabs. In effect making them a cross, originally but now a recognized breed. What happens if you were put a TB mare to a Arab Stallion or vice versa would you call the foal a TB x Arab or would it be a directly an Anglo Arab or would it be both ? :o If so would it be eligible to registered direct with the Anglo Arab society (assuming there is one !? ) Or only as a part bred arab with the Arab society. Sorry if this seems a silly question :o

As long as both parents are registered with thier own breed societies then it is automatically described as an Anglo Arab. It has to have a minimum of 25% Arab blood and its ancestors must be arab, TB or Anglo arab.:) They can be registered with Wetherbys or the Arab horse society and probably several other societies too, I'm not sure if there is a specific breed society, but I do know they have a stud book in France as they have been breeding them there since the 1830's.

An old friend once told me that they were only Anglo Arabs if the sire was TB and the mare was Arab, and that the other way round just would be called a cross ??? not sure, was told that years ago.
I don't belive Anglo Arab is a breed (doesn't have a stud book or anything as far as I know) but it is a very common and well recognised cross.

I believe that the only difference in naming breeds as per the dams breed versus the sires breed is when breeding donkeys to horses, where you either get a hinny or a mule.

Jessey, the Arab Horse Society runs three stud books, one for Pure bred Arabs, one for Part Bred arabs, and one for Anglo Arabs. They are an officially recognised breed, and whichever way the parents go, if it is TB x Arab, it is an anglo arab. Any other cross is a part bred arab, but to be classed as Anglo, both parents must be registered with the relevant societies. I only know this cos 1) I have a pure bred mare, and 2) I am trying to trace her daughter, who is Anglo Arab.

There is no separate society for Anglo Arabs, but they can be registered with the AHS and they have separate show classes as well.

Ah thanks, I thought that thing about which way they were bred sounded funny
I know you can register a part and anglo with the AHS but the Anglo is not recognised as a seperate breed :p My boy is registered as part bred because his dam was not registered with wetherbys, but she certainly looked full Tb.

same as mine then, registered as 50% Arab, I do find it gets confusing when trying to explain that he is AA but registered as a part bred :D
