Hi My name is Annabelle and have just started riding ( approx 8 weeks ago) and have just managed the art of trotting (ha ha)
My son is 15 years old and has been riding for around 2 years and we have just bought him his first horse Bruno a 14-2 hands cob but we are having difficulties with him as he was bought from a riding school and does not like hacking out alone.
My son has no patience with me so when I ask him questions about what to do e.g tacking Bruno up, it is like getting blood out of a stone.
I would love to meet or chat to any people in the North East who like me have just started riding ( I live in the Chester le Street, County Durham area).
I currently have lessons at South Causey but am open to riding elsewhere.

Hi Annabelle. I'm based in Seaham, County Durham. I'm quite new at this learning to ride business. Have had my horse for a couple of year but due to a few 'incidents' I have a total lack of confidence and have not ride for a while. Where do you keep your son's horse - I know a few of the livery yards in Chester-le-Street.
Emma.

Hi
At great lumley it is more of a farm than a livery. I am looking to move him but dont really know any livery's in the area as new to horses.
How long have you been riding for?

HI Emma
I too have little confidence. My son has plenty though he has no patience with me. I would love nothing more than to be able to get up one day think it is a lovely day to go for a ride and then go for a hack somewhere on my own or with others but i have not yet got confidence for that and dont know if i will. Bruno my horse is lovely but is very nervous as has been used to going round and round at a riding school and now he needs to get used to going out on his own. i have just got him back after 4 weeks as a mate who is very experinced took him for me to school him. he is improved but he needs patience as sometimes he does not want to go and does a little " dance" so i definately cannot ride him at the moment as am a complete novice

There is a nice livery yard in Chester-le-Street called Red Rose Stud and Livery - think they only offer full livery at the moment. Has an indoor and outdoor school (bit basic but does the job) they also have access to off road hacking. Usual other facilities that you would expect - toilet facilities, kitched with kettle/microwave etc. Everyone seems quite friendly. I've got the address/telephone numbers if you need them.
My story is a little long and to be honest I haven't really progressed very far as yet. Had a few weeks of lessons a few years ago and really enjoyed them but frustrated that I could only ride once a week. OH then bought me my first horse - bless him:p . 15.2hh Flea bitten grey Irish Sport Horse (Patches)- to cut a long story short we were promised that he was a lot of things that he wasn't. Couple of scarry moment when he spooked and not too sure what at. Have worked with him on an off for two years (mainly from the ground) and he has turned into a kind, genuine chap. I have had someone professionally school him only now I have been left with a lack of confidence that has meant I have not ridden him since just before Christmas:( . I know it's all in my head as everyone keeps telling me how nice etc he is and deep down I know they are right. My husbands has a TB broadmare - not in foal at the moment but hopefully soon. He also has a 3 year old flat race horse - in training at the moment - not sure if she will be up to the job. Lastly I have a 9 month old coloured colt - ID x Oldenburg warmblood. He is on livery at Red Rose Stud and Livery - trying not to get too attached as he is for sale.
My aim for the next few months is to restart some groundwork with him and start riding him in the school.
you sound like you've made good progress in your lessons - will you be able to get some extra practice with your son's horse?

Whereabouts is redrose and how much is full livery( what does that entail) at the moment i am paying £10 for livery and around £11 for feed ( haylage and straw)
I would not mind paying more if it means he is closer
I am going to ride Bruno on Friday my sister ( she too has a cob) is going to put him on a lead rope.
My mate who schooled him is going to give my son some lessons each week on him as it is a learning process as he needs to get used to Bruno too.
She says it is only bad habits with Bruno at the moment and will patience and time it will pay off.
Did you put your foal for sale on adtrader as I am sure I saw an advert there.
Where did you have lessons at. I am having lessons at south causey but dont know if they are good or not as having not had much to do with horses before. I am the same as you I ride only once a week and it is not enough I love it and it is great when you get the confidence each time you go and you can manage to do things though at the moment have just mastered trot but will be doing canter next week.

Redrose is new door to South Grange Farm. If you are heading to the Riverside Cricket Ground from Great Lumley you go straight over at the rab at the entrance to the cricket ground, next rab turn left and at the next rab turn left again - down a farm track (their is a sign at the top 'Red Rose Stud and Livery'). Full livery with them is a morning turn out, rugged up if necessary, ad lib haylage, brought in out the field, feed, change from turnout rug to stable rug, use of indoor/outdoor school. Not sure how much livery is at the moment - OH deal with the bills. YO's are Rachel and Ren and can be contacted on 0191 4770652 or 07906 691372 - just say Emma with Fudge gave you the details.
Yes I have advertised foal in adtrader - not much of a response. Annoying thing is that I did sell him when he was 3 months old and he was to go when weaned to someone in Penrith. Deposit & details taken etc and then she seemed to disappear off the face of the earth. Think will need to advertise him elsewhere.
Did have lessons at Penshaw - not very impressed with most the instructors. However they did get a good instructor recently called Joanne Little only prob was I was usally given a really tired, hard to get going cob.

I think I will give redrose a ring. Do you know if they have any vacancies for Bruno?
Have you heard any reports about South Causey. To be honest I like it up there I have a lovely RI and at the moment am having semi private lessons but they are only for 1/2 an hour and I need more. The only thing is my 2 daughters are having lessons too and what with my son having lessons on bruno it costs a fortune.
How long did you have lessons for?

Think they have vacancies. Only heard good reports about South Causey. I prob only had about 6 lessons before OH bought me by horse. I had my own horse at Red Rose for a while and Rachel gave me some lessons. Since then I have had someone professionally school him and at the end of each session I would get on an she would give me some pointers for 10/15 mins. Fully understand what you mean about the cost. Having to pay the upkeep for 4 horses is costing us a fortune. Hopefully one day we will buy a house with land and have the horses at home - at least there will be no travel. I'm lucky in that there is only me learning to ride my 3 daughters (2,4 and 6) are not really that interested although they do love the horses so probably only a matter of time.

Have rang red rose and am going to look at it tomorrow.
He seemed really friendly. It is going to cost 240-260 per month. When you pay for full livery ( sorry if i appear thick)
does that include feed ie sugarbeet etc or do you buy that on top
all my money seems to go on the horse ha ha

includes all usual feeds - sugarbeet, coolmix, molly chop etc. would not include any specialist suppliments that you may wish to use. also does not cover the cost of worming.

Welcome to NR - we have quite an active NE group and usually have meet-ups a few times a year - usually around the Chester-Le-Street area.
My two (soon to be three) horses are Fencehouses - just up the road from Great Lumley, although we are lucky as two friends and I have our own yard between us. Not all finished yet (definitely a work in progress) but we finally moved in just before Christmas after a loooong wait.
My older mare is awaiting the arrival of her first foal - due around 18th April.
Plan was to have a 'stable-warming' combined 'wet-the-foal's-head' party at the yard once the weather improved. However, two of our long-term NR members are about to set off for a new life in Shetland at Easter so a NE NR get-together may happen to give them a send -off.

Hi you actually have lessons at the same place I did. Does Sue take you? I also know one of the stable girls who works there.
Live just outside chester le street. A bus ride away
Ebie equestrian - Just noticed you say you were at Red Rose was this before Rachel took over Red Rose? If so you may remember a girl called Katherine she used to break horses for Rachel. Last one I remember was Pingu (? something along that lines)
LESLEY - I agree we will need to have a get together before esther and steve go. Dont look at me this time to organise it I've too much college work on. Someone let me know where, when and what time and I'll try to be there :D Also need you to spare me some time to come and see Peter in that heavy schedule of yours. I need to know just how much dressage this horse as done as he dont seem to know what a straight line is and I'm being told by various people they dont think he has done it. Reckon he is more of an event horse

I was there after the place changed hands from Mr and Mrs Cummings and was sold to Mr Bainbridge. He doesn't have anything to do with the yard and Rachel and Ren now run it. Rachel still has Pingu although I don't think she really gets time to ride him. Sorry don't think I know Katherine - I know she was having someone called Vikki do schooling with him last year.

South causey?? I had one lesson there and didnt like it at all. I have lessons with tracey harrison at pockerley livery... She is very sypathetic and shows you how to tack up and so on. I've been there for 8 years and thoroughly enjoy it. Have lessons on shadow twice a month and on her horses the 2 weeks. I think having a variety of horses to ride is brilliant.

I had a lot of lessons there (south causey) but feel I got so far and then got stuck in a rut. Part of the problem was the changing of instructors week after week. That seemed to settle when Sue and Phil started to teach. Loved Phil teaching us as we used to have a great laugh
Notice your another Chester le Street fan :D
