Anybodys horses on here have wall eye [pictures] - I find them really fascinating.

Its lack of pigment/no pigment in cells isnt it? What is pigment - I'd love to have a proper explanation - my book says very little on the matter and the google searches just.....are difficult LOL:p

Pigment is just the name for something that makes the colour, the same as with hair.
I didn't think that horses with wall eyes lacked pigment, as they still have colour in the centre of their eyes, but not round the edges, thought thye just had small eyes and big eye 'oles :D :D
Never really thought about it though, so likely to be miles out

i think that if no pigment was present the eye would be pink, as in animals affected by albinoism.

I've been doing some more research into this, and found some incredibly knowledgable people who told me lots more about blue eyes.... :D

Blue eyes are most often linked to a fairly common gene called splash white. It causes distinctive bottom-heavy blazes which are often wider in the middle than anywhere else, and obvious white markings - it works in a similar way to sabino, but doesn't have the ragged edges and roaning and ticking that sabino does. It also often results in blue eyes. Blue eyes are basically eyes that have less (not no) brown pigment in them.

Eyes only have one 'colour' - brown. Blue eyes have the least amount of pigment, but as has been said, would be pink if there was no pigment at all (because it's the pigment that keeps the blood vessels in the eye from being visible - without pigment, the vessels can be seen, giving the eye a pink appearance.) - in humans, green eyes are eyes that have more brown pigment, but not as much as brown. There is no separate 'green eye' gene in humans. Spalsh doesn't just cause these characteristic white markings - it also causes the eyes to be blue, or lack melanin (the brown colouring). Sometimes the eyes are brown with blue flecks, or half-blue and half-brown. Splash appears to interfere with the production of melanin in the eye and this is how blue eyes seem to be passed down certain bloodlines (especially noticeable in certain Welsh lines). It also explains how blue eyes crop up out of the blue (ha ha) on occasion - the white markings are more than likely there, but the gene just hasn't been expressed that wildly.

It's also linked to certain overo genes in the same kind of way - but splash white is common in some UK breeds where overo is not so well known. There is no separate 'blue eye gene' as such - it is linked to coat pattern.

 I thought wall eye was different to blue eyes
Bo has what I know to be a wall eye, where the brown pigment of the eye doesn't stretch right to the edge, so you get a visible white area around the brown bit, so what is that really?
My friend has an Appolosa X Paint who has one brown eye and one blue, I find it a bit creapy, another friend has a gelding with pink eyes - thats VERY scary ;)

Wall eyes, glass eyes, chalk eyes and blue eyes all describe the same thing - blue eyes. A horse that has a white-lined eye, or where the white is visible at the edge of the brown iris, doesn't have wall eyes - it's called a sclera. It's very common in spotted patterns and Appaloosa breeding.

Pink eyes?!! What colour is the gelding? Do you have any pics? That's really interesting - I've never come across pink eyes at all. Pink eyes are what happens when there is no pigment at all in the eye, and I've never seen it documented in horses.

They also appear to have cleaned up some of their horses with photoshop :p I know because I've done it myself with greys. Not really any harm in it I guess but they could as easily clean up lumps and bumps!

I thought that a wall eye was just one blue eye and one brown eye.

Does anyone know what the genetic background of a wall eye is? Is it caused by a recessive gene or just a lack of pigment development in one or both eyes? Is there any way to predict the probability of offspring with a wall eye (unless it is not heritable)

[QUOTE=ponylover88;829819]Snowey, the cremello has wall eyes. Can be quite easily seen in these pics...QUOTE]

In cremello if they dont have blue eyes then it isn't cremello. They are the only breed allowed to have blue eyes as breed standard.

There I learned something when listening to breeders talking to me at riding club........ ;)

HI interesing thread about wall eyes my connemara stallion has amber eyes he is registered as dark dun but he must be a buckskin as he is carrying the cream gene. How do you get amber eyes is it like the wall eye?? I would love to have a foal off him with amber eyes but he has never passed it on
