My instructor has taught me to do several strides of sitting trot to collect him then give canter aid. Sit up, do not throw myself or reins at my boy, and keep on inner bend i.e. head slightly to inside on what ever rein you are on.

Is it possible to do walk-canter? I find it much easier to sit to and don't start bouncing around and trying (in vain) to ask for canter from trot. Small trick needed to know is to when in the series of footfalls to give aids for the canter, but some horses already do know if you ask for canter.

chances are you'll not have much of a problem at a show.
Tarquin is really calm by himself and is quite hard to get into canter now.
Did a dressage trst today though and by god did he move. Must have looked really funny, I wasn't expecting instant effect, he was really hyper and on his toes

I agree with Floob.
If your horse isn't cantering because he/she is being lazy... chances are they will pick up canter much easier off-property ;)
