When I jump, I've finally figured out what makes me fall off. I fold forward in anticipation, and when the horse puts in an extra stride I always fall off because I'm thrown off balance, and my lower leg always goes backwards so I stand no chance of staying on

Any advice?

While working over small jumps on a safe horse, try closing your eyes going to the jump, so you aren't apt to jump ahead. It will teach you to stay with the horse and learn to trust that you will go with his movement.

Don't make any changes in the last three strides before take-off, when you can fold. After that the horse loses focus of the jump and you messing around will unbalance him, which could be why he pops in an extra stride. You can make preparation in the approach before that last three strides, try to set yourself up to succeed using small jumps and groundlines

We used to practice counting into jumps to see the strides. Maybe if you were more aware of exactly when your horse was going to take off that would help? Sorry, I'm not really much kop, but just a suggestion.

agree with above Good old fahsioned counting out loud! :)

You will probably get it wrong the first couple of times, but just count out the last 4 strides to the fence. You will quickly learn to judge the distance with your eye but count down the strides then you shoudl get a feel for the jump.

Also try no to fold fold your upper body forward, practice just folding your hips and pushing your bottom back a little.
Dont think you have to throw yourself over the jump , just fold and let him take you over. :)

Those sort of habits take a while to break.

Now you know whats happeneing you've got to make a conscious effort ot stop yourself then after a while it'll become a 'good' habit.

As you come into a jump look up, put your shoulders back and wait until you fell the horse actually lifting up before you give with your hands - try not to concentrate on folding as such- kepp the jumps small so you don't have to then you can build them up slowly.
