Avatars???

I was just wondering how some of you guys get little pics underneath your names. I think they're called avatar (sp?) but I'm not sure. Anyway can someone tell me where I can find one on the internet and how to put it under my name? Any help would be appreciated! Thanx in advance!

P.S. Please be specific 'cause I don't really know all the fancy internet terms!
